I had to work tonight at my 2nd job, once a week, at a deli in a grocery store. We have pretty awesome customers, very few ever have anything to complain about, and this makes the job super easy.
tonight, I had a guy come up and order 1lb of cheddar cheese.
we have a couple so I said, which kind? Mild, sharp,...?
He says sharp is fine, the yellow sharp cheddar.
So I grab it and ask, as we are always expected to do, how thick would he like it?
HE said, it doesn't matter really, just... uhm....
he then puts his hand up on the counter, gently pounds it on the counter and says "you know, I have to put my dog down tomorrow and this is for her. I am getting her some cheddar cheese because she loves it. SHe is out in the car, I have her out on her last ride. I am getting her some cheddar cheese and going to get her a steak too"
He took a step back and I don't think he could say another word. I felt so sad, it was the most unexpected discussion with a customer I have ever had.
I told him he was the best dog owner ever.
I sliced it all up for him and handed it to him and told him "I am really sorry about your dog"
he said thank you and walked away.
After he left I almost had to take a couple minutes away from the counter. I just told H the story and cried.
I am squalling. What a precious man. Is he a regular? He is going to need some extra hugs.
I did not recognize him, but i am only there a night a week. He coukd be there other nights. I wanted to ask him so badly of i could see her but i minded my business.
Part of me thinks the dog may be a retired police dog. I met 2 cops in my store couple years ago and one of them had a female K9 german shepherd who was retiring. And the Officer that had her strikes a resemblance ....
What a sweet man. I am tearing up. I am taking our foster dog in tomorrow morning to get her fixed. She gets extra hugs before going in and a special dinner tomorrow night. My other furbabies are getting hugs now.
