Our last house did not have a screen door on the front door and it was one of the things I really would have liked to have. I love keeping the door open on nice days and to be able to when kids/dh are outside.
We are building and the style of door that's typical on the design we are looking at has sidelights. Do you think it looks odd to have a screen door on it?
Something like this (but not this color or style):
I do not like screen doors on the door you will be getting. We also have a door like that. For some reason it just bugs me.
One of our neighbors just installed a new screen door that disappears when it's not in use. So you have the functionality of a screen door, but you don't have to see it otherwise.

We have a sliding screen door that retracts when not in use and I wouldn't recommend it. There is a track on the top and bottom that secure the screen and the one on the bottom got smooched because people walk in and out, so it doesn't work well anymore. It also doesn't retract smoothly. I will say ours is old, so perhaps they are made better now - just something to keep in mind.
We have a screen door with side lights. Ours is the split Larson door that you can slide up to be solid glass and down to be screen. Between our last two houses, we had three of the doors. 2/3 are broken. (1 was broken in less than 4 years. It still works, but doesn't lock when it's solid glass. It stays up, so it's still functional. The other is less than 15 years old & broken, but I don't have any idea when or how it broke.)
It's not my favorite look, but I'm happy with the trade-off of fashion for the ability to have fresh air & all of the extra light.

I'll have to look into that!
We have these and we love them!!!! I can't say enough. They look great, don't get in the way, etc. They are in great shape. Our house was built in 2005 and are original I think. They are a nicer brand, I'd have to ask dh which one though
Our front door is like yours. We have a Phantom screen door (it retracts into itself) and I love it. I use it all the time when the weather is nice. There are other brands www.phantomscreens.com/
