If you live in a cold weather climate, what do you do with your family's winter weather crap? I started to clean out our coat closet and found eleventy billion winter hats, a handful of random mittens/gloves and a few scarves, all in a jumbled mess.
How can I store them in a manner in which we can see what's there and actually get to it without messing up everything else? After making my husband part with half of his crap, of course, including the Abercrombie knit beanie from when he was like 20.
Our coat closet has a full size door. I hung one of those shoe organizers over the inside of the door and we tuck hats, mittens, etc into the shoe slots. It works fairly well!
A basket on top of our hall tree for the most often used. Then the excess ones that we use when shoveling or serious outside play in the cold I keep in the hall tree bench.

We do this and put kid stuff in the lowest levels so they can be easily grabbed and put away.
I had 5 hooks on the back of the door for storage, 3 labeled baskets on the shelf in the closet, and then a small ikea rast dresser in our entryway that had some stuff as well.
One big drawer holds hats & scarves & one for gloves. I put baskets for kids socks on the bottom shelf too because I was sick of them coming downstairs without any.
I keep them in an over the door shoe organizer in our entry closet, we can see everything and it is easy access. As long as we put things back right as we come in the door we don't lose stuff.
In the summer I keep sunscreen, bug spray, hats etc in it.
Metal basket on a shelf in our coat closet for h and I. I like the metal because I can see in it easily. Also, we just do not keep a lot. ill pick a container and we get rid of stuff until everything fits into it.

We have a bench with space for baskets underneath in our entryway. Each kid has their own basket, and DH and I share one. In the summer, we swap out the winter gear for sun hats, sunglasses, etc.
