DD did this for a couple of years beginning around 2 1/2. We would see her do it and try to stop her but she would still do it. Eventually she just stopped.
My niece started doing this around age 3 and now, at age 5, it's getting better and hair is filling in nicely. My sister actually took her to see a specialist to see if it was a medical condition, and they did diagnose her with something (I can't remember what it's called but it wasn't anything serious) and gave her some coping mechanisms in case it was stress related and other tips on how to manage it. They did tell her it isn't uncommon.
Sorry, that isn't advice or anything, just her experience.
My DD did this around 15 months. Almost same as yours, clumps around the bed, longer hair gone to short with bald spots. She was also eating it which caused awful constipation. We figured out it was anxiety over being in the crib because it stopped as soon as we transferred her to a toddler bed at 18 months.

i just read this to H and he got really hopeful. we have her bed frame/mattress set up, i just haven't gotten around to getting sheets/duvet but i will make that a priority this week. thank you SO MUCH for this suggestion, seriously. i'm really sorry you've been here, it's so frustrating and sad to see.
It is very frustrating and sad. A picture of her from that time just popped up on my timehop recently and it brought back all those emotions. I really hope that transferring to a regular bed is the solution for your kiddo.
