I meant to share this with you all the day it occurred (Friday), but we left town and I didn't have the patience to type it all out on the app. Luckily I live-texted this to my BFF so I have a record to reference. My husband had an eye appointment Friday morning. While sitting in the waiting room, I was subject to a very loud and offensive (at least to me...) conversation. I live in the South, so I'm not surprised that I hear people with these views....I was surprised that they had no issue at all discussing it loudly in a quiet room full of people.
The scene: Crowded waiting room on a Friday morning. People of different races and ages. Most are quiet/alone, a few having conversations in low voices. Your typical waiting room.
The culprits: Two middle-aged women. One wearing an "I'm proud to be a CHRISTIAN MOM" with verses and crosses all over it, and a tacky cross bracelet.
The two women carry on a loud conversation the entire hour I'm waiting on my husband. The highlights:
Christian Mom (CM) playing a video loudly on her phone. The video is (from what I gather) her child's preschool class, at what I assume is a church-affiliated preschool (Side note: I am a Christian, so I have no problem with church-affiliated anything. I do have a problem with tacky ass bigots parading as Christians). The video is children singing a hymn that consists of one or two lines--"Lord I need you, Lord I need you." They play it over. and over. and over again. Very loud. At this point, I'm just irritated because they're playing a video so loudly in a quiet room, and children's voices/singing can sometimes freak me out.
The video leads to a discussion regarding prayer in schools. CM believes that prayer should be allowed, but no one is required to participate (ok...I can say this makes sense. We always had a moment of silence to start our schools days). They go back and forth on having prayer partners or something like that in schools...whatever. Then CM says "That's the reason these school shooting keep happening. Prayer isn't allowed in schools, so God wasn't there to protect those kids." WHAT. At this point, I'm extremely uncomfortable and looking around the room to see if anyone else hearing this...everyone is buried in their phones.
Conversation regarding "Freedom of religion" continues. Back to not requiring people to participate. Then she says "Except these Muslims that come in here and say it is against their religion. You chose to come to this country! You can deal with it or leave!". To which her friend says (we'll call her Scrunchie, cause she had one on) "We need to be more like Japan. They don't allow any of those Muslims in their country." The conversation regarding Muslims continues on for a few more minutes. Again, very uncomfortable.
They watch more annoying videos on FB. Apparently Scrunchie is looking for work. Christian Mom says "I know Baskin Robbins is hiring, but DO NOT apply there. I have not gone there in 3 years, do you know why?" Then she goes on to tell the story....apparently, a few years ago, her kid wanted a BR ice cream cake for his birthday. They made a mistake on the cake, put "6th" instead of "4th" in front of "birthday." Hey, that sucks, I know. One time my sister got a cookie cake and they put the completely wrong name on there....but you know what? we took it and just scraped the name off and went on with life because it tasted the same. Not so for CM. Not only did they mess up the cake, they didn't have another cake in stock that they wanted (not clear on if they pre-ordered this second cake, or if they just planned it buy it that day and expected it to be there). She requests to speak to the manager (of course), who isn't there because it is a holiday weekend or something. She. is. pissed. She says she keeps calling the store for 3 weeks to talk to someone about it, and finally gets a hold of the manager who asks what he can do to make her happy. She tells him she wants her money ($50) back. He says "Come by at x date, x time and we'll have it for you." She says "You will have my money when I come by, or the next call will be from my lawyer....the next call will be from my lawyer and I'll get more than my $50. I will be the owner of this Baskin Robbins" (At this point in the text convo, my lawyer BFF says "That's not how it works." duh.). At this point, I'm just disgusted.
They entertained themselves with One Direction gossip (they were in their 40s, I would assume). I was so thankful my husband came out and was ready to leave before they started discussing politics...although, I think it is safe to assume they are Trump supporters.
So, that's my story. I mean, I have lived my whole life in the South, so I should not be shocked people like this exist. But to talk about it in PUBLIC like that? I was so embarrassed and uncomfortable. If I were a more confrontational person, I would have told them to quiet down or something...but there's no way I could have done that.
A lady in the waiting room wanted to chat, which I generally don't mind, until she went off on "retarded" state laws for getting a new drivers license. She said that word 3 times in a 5 minute conversation. I was so glad they called my name quickly. I live in such a pc bubble, I didn't think anyone used that word anymore.

I remain amazed at how many people think this is okay.

I got to overhear a ridiculous discussion about how laws requiring kids to be in car seats is government overstretch and usurping parental rights. I had my head full of hair color and foils so I couldn't exactly get up and walk out, but there was some definite WTF-face that I was trying to control.
The first night in my water aerobics class, I overheard a couple people talking about Detroit. One guy said it should be torn down (he said worse but I can't recall now), while a woman replied they should all be locked in and fight it out like Hunger Games. I'm still pissed.

All of Detroit or just inner inner Detroit?
I didn't question who she thought should kill each other.

"Excuse me, m'am? Where would you like the arena walls built? I've heard 8 Mile was the historical boundary..."
And to the OP, yeah, unfortunately I have heard similar conversations in public when I lived in NC. I worked in public schools and at a surgeon's office, and met a lot of people just like CM/Scrunchie who had a lot of opinions about who their children went to school with and who they had to sit near in the waiting room, etc.
