Candles, air fresheners, and the like make my breathing much worse (This really lowers air quality in the home). Same with opening windows in mold and pollen land. We have good luck with running a dehumidifyer in the crawl or basement, cleaning everything really well (we haven't had anything but a tiny amount of carpet on stairs n many years), changing air filters regularly, like once a month, repainting places with retained smells using Khils before color, using cleaning supplies that do not make it worse (I use Mrs. Myers Lavender for most things, which is weird because straight lavender usually kills me). Baking soda in closets, vinegar, ect can help, but ultimately, sealing the stink and preventing it, like the dehumidifier, changing filters, and getting rid of carpet, helps a great deal.
We use an essential oil diffuser, and open the windows whenever weather permits.
I had a friend whose house smells amazing due to essential oils. What do you use (diffuser and oils)? I'd like to avoid an mlm if possible.
I have no idea what oils to use for smells, but I got some from Amazon for headaches that are really helpful. The brand is Eden's Garden and they're like $5 for a small container vs. 6x that price for Young Living or whatever.
I'm going to burn for this I know but I really like the smell of the Swiffer citrus wipes. I use them often enough my house faintly smells of them constantly.
Since you just moved though and are trying to get rid of another person's "smell' I'd open windows, run a dehumidifer like pp mentioned and scrub down deep clean style anything you can. Changing filters helps too.
Basically what everyone already mentioned. Painting our walls helped a ton to get the previous owner's smell out. We also light candles and burn oils. I also love to buy cleaners and laundry supplies that smell really good. I love the way that my basement smells when I open the dryer to get my clean clothes.
I currently use oils I got from a friend who is in one of the MLM companies, but I'll probably buy replacements from Amazon. I've heard good things about the Eden's Garden brand.
I agree with others, though. You want to get all the smell harboring dirt gone before you start trying to put good smells in. Painting the walls would definitely help. We also had our air-conditioning ductwork cleaned (then later replaced, but that was an extreme case!).
-carpets cleaned -walls washed and/or painted -air ducts cleaned (I totally thought this was a scam but it made a huge difference with dust) -windows open when possible -use baking soda left out
I would hold off on any candles or scented products... that seems to make things worse IMO. Try to find the cause of the smell instead!
We just buy oils at the natural food store, mostly citrus ones and a couple different blends. There's a "mental focus" blend I like but I don't know what brand it is. They sell them on Amazon too.
