Find a sociology statistics book, if you're not a math whiz they break them down a lot easier and give more examples of application in real life aside from plugging formulas.

YES! Harvey Motulsky's book, Intuitive biostatistics. He breaks down all of the theory in layman's terms, and uses real-life examples. I recently loaned it to a friend getting her master's in nursing and she said it was a huge life saver.
There isn't a single mathematical formula in the entire book. Once I have graduate students of my own, I'll gift this book to them on their first day.
