A few weeks ago I ordered three bras and two tiny size containers of Creme de la Mer (prompted by a post on here, actually). Both packages arrived on the same day; I opened them to make sure my orders were correct, then put the merchandise all in one envelope, and the packaging in the other envelope to throw away. I had houseguests arriving any minute so I quickly tossed the packaging and stashed the merchandise in my closet so they wouldn't see my bras lying on the dining room table, and forgot all about it. This morning I remembered the bras and went to get them - and the envelope in my closet has the packaging in it. MFer!
I am kicking myself so hard right now. Why did I not just put the stuff away right away? I actually had to walk past my bra drawer to get to the closet. Argggghhh.
I ordered a top from J. Crew for $70 earlier in the summer. The cut was not flattering on me, so I put it back in the shipping package and left it in the trunk of my car to return. However, I was in the thick of dissertation-writing, and it sat in my car for a few weeks. I had a bunch of other stuff in trunk that needed to be cleaned out (not gross trash, but random junk). My H decided to surprise me one day by cleaning out my trunk...and in the process, throwing away the $70 shirt. :-( I caught it the next day, and went dumpster-diving to save it. Luckily it had not been trash pickup day, and the top was in a plastic bag that kept it safe from dumpster ick. I would have been so irritated over #250 worth of merchandise!
oh no! I can relate- a couple years ago we were painting our bedroom. my husband cleared everything out of it for me and for some reason I can not comprehend thought it was a good idea to put ALL of my purses/ bags in a black trash bag and put them in the garage. A week later when I was done painting and was putting everything back I was like- hey where are my purses? sure enough he had forgotten he did that and thought it was a bag of trash and bye bye every single purse I ever owned except the one I was currently carrying. I cry just thinking about it now. thousands of dollars in the garbage

Thanks everyone! I'm still pissed at myself. Literally 20 seconds of putting stuff away would have avoided this. One of my worst habits is leaving stuff until the last minute, and I was doing the "guest are coming mad dash" cleanup when this happened. So I'm also irritated with myself for not being able to kick that bad habit. I forgot that I used the remainder of a gift card toward the bras, so I actually only paid around $210. But still.
I try and block it from my memory as much as I can lol. it just came up this weekend again though because his mom is looking for a bag for something and I was like oh! I have the perfect bag for you! wait.... no, I don't :-( :@ :-(

Oh my gosh, I feel nauseous thinking about that! I think I would have marched your H TO THE DUMP to look for it. You'd be surprised what they can recover if they know what day they were dumped and what area. I know it's too long ago now, but I'm going to have nightmares about losing my purses like that now.

I had this pair of shoes that I loved. I thought I lost one of the shoes, and after looking in vain for the partner, tossed the remaining show in the trash. Two weeks later, I find the other shoe! WTF. I had already thrown away one of the shoes, so I tossed the second one and steamed about it. They were almost new and probably cost me about $100. They were really cute strappy sandals.
That sucks. One time I was cleaning and threw away a ring box that was empty. Well, then I couldn't find the ring that DH gave me for my 18th birthday. The ring box was from a newer ring he bought me and I temporarily put my old ring in there and then I threw that box away! I was freaking out and DH said he'd buy me new ring. Of course the point was that the one I threw away had special meaning. My ring turned up in some random container on my desk a couple weeks later. I got lucky, but I know the feeling.
all these stories suck! I can relate though too. Due to similar packaging and mailing issues I've thrown out $20 cash, brand new thong, gift from my mom and a plane ticket. The plane ticket worked out, but it was a PIA before internet check-in.

I threw out tickets to a hockey game instead of garbage when I was cleaning out my desk. They were a gift and I had already shown them to my boyfriend (now H) so I had to buy them again. As a poor student, it sucked. I confessed to him about a year later. So I know how that feels. And brand new stuff?! Boo!

Something similar to this happened to me. We were moving out of an apt a few years ago, and I had packed everything except I forgot some stuff in my closet. So I had to quickly throw all my jeans (designer and regular) and a huge pile of clothes I needed to take to the dry cleaners or handwash (including my bajillion dollar long-line bra from my wedding) into two black trash bags because we ran out of boxes/suitcases. This kid H mentors came by and said he would help us take the last few boxes down to the truck. I was really protective over the two black trash bags and made sure I put them on the truck MYSELF and put them off in a random little space that was surrounded by boxes, so they wouldn't get confused with some (WHITE) trash bags (full of TRASH) that we had to throw out. We stopped by the dumpster on the way there, and the kid ran to the back and threw out the bags of trash on the very end of the truck. Things became really hectic over the next week or two and I didn't get around to unpacking my closet for at least 1.5 weeks.
Both bags got thrown out. All my jeans. ALL. A good majority of dresses and all my skirts. And the freakin bra.
I still cry about it to this day. I'm so annoyed with myself that I didn't just put the bags on my freakin lap. He must've thought he was helping out and that we "forgot" to put those bags with everything else (even though I did say more than once "THESE BLACK BAGS ARE NOT TRASH!")
ETA: The worst is when I think of something I want to wear that I haven't worn in awhile, and I go look in my closet and can't find it, until finally I'm all "oh yeah. It's gone."

That sucks. I had some medication dh accidentally threw away. It was only a few pills so they were on one of those cardboard papers instead of a pill bottle. It was still in the pharmacy envelope and it was so light dh thought it was empty.
My dad accidentally threw away my mom's wedding rings! She was cleaning them and left them to dry on some Kleenex or tp on the bathroom counter. They went dumpster diving and found them! I think this happened one more time with diamond earrings and they found them that time too.
