Are you looking for an upright, canister, or handheld? Dyson has a cute little handheld called the DC35. They're phasing it out for the new handheld coming out in the fall, so you might be able to find a deal. It stores super tiny, you can use it on all floors. It's still in the $300 range, but I can't say enough good stuff about my Dyson.
We got an Electrolux at...wait for it...wait for it...you know it's coming...COSTCO! I don't remember how much it was. Maybe $100 and we bought it when there was a coupon? It comes with a charging stand and is cordless and bagless. We use it primarily for our hardwood floors, but it can be used on carpet, too. It's pretty awesome.
We have a speedy sweep at work. It works pretty good. It is like one that you see in a restaurant but is battery operated and it picks up great. We have a small carpeted area in our office, but also hardwood flooring where are desks are. You can google it. speedysweep.com
We have a Shark Navigator (the purple one, the white one is bigger), it's quite a bit smaller than regular upright vacuums and it's very light. The suction is really good. It has a switch where you can turn off the roller and use it on hardwood/tile. You can also lift the canister off and use it as a portable vac. The pet hair attachment is really good also.

It is both MM and awesome. I have a longhaired black dog and a 950 sq. ft. apartment with wall-to-wall carpeting, and it is all I need.
I got this, and I kind of hate it. Not enough to spend the money to replace it, though Besides, who knows if I'll have carpet 2 years from now when we have to move again.
It's heavy, and it doesn't work on tile. The weight is my biggest complaint.
Which one do you guys have? BB&B has three different models. I was planning to just go tomorrow and get it with my 20% (we let our Costco membership expire).
I'm not sure and I won't be home til Monday. It's light purplish and has a part that pulls out for detachable cleaning. Not sure if that helps!!!
