I have a HDHP with about $1300 left before I hit my deductible this year. The way my adderall rx is written (2 pills a day) it costs $800 for a 90 day supply. I only take one a day so I can obviously stretch it much longer. However if I got my doc to continue to write it that way I would be able to get (2) 90 day supplies (which is actually 360 days in my world) for a grand total of $1600 (of which I would only pay $1300 because I'd hit my deductible. It's also possible this cost could be way less depending on how high my ER bill is). If I have the rx written the way I actually take the pills I could get (2) 90 day supplies this year still which would be $800 and then would still pay totally out of pocket again starting next year. Scenario one means paying approx $3.60/pill, scenario two is $4.50/pill. Does this make sense? Good financial decision or illegal?

I think it is okay that you have filled the prescription and changed the dosing this time, but once the doctor knows you have changed the dosing instructions, he needs to write a new prescription to keep your file up to date. If you sometimes take 2, you could ask him to write "take 1-2 per day" If you wont see your doc before your next refill, I have no issue with getting the cheaper option
I think the only iffy part would be that it is a C2 drug and you need the live script every month. If the dr is writing it so that you get 2 months, that might be illegal. I really have no idea though. One of my meds is written like that, but it's not one that I need a live script for.
oh, I didn't even think about that. I have to use a mail order pharmacy to fill this crap. Ugh. This really might make me go back to having my therapist tell my PCP what to prescribe because they are both a lot closer and easier to make appts with.
