I am appalled at what they serve at DS's school. Today for breakfast was cinnamon rolls with frosting! Who the heck thinks kids need to start their day with sugar?!
Ugh I hate it. We don't eat breakfast but are mandated to buy school lunch for the first semester of K. I have not been impressed and even though it's convenient I will be packing his lunch in January. He gets in the car starving most days because it's things he doesn't eat.

Mandated? As in they won't let you bring a lunch from home? Why? What could possible be the reason for this? I don't know how a school can do that...

Yea, that is pretty asinine. If the food sucked, that would become my hill.
I completely agree that generally the food sucks. The School Lunch Program (federally mandated) is crappy in general. I know it's a big step up from pizza and fries every day which is what a lot of kids might be eating at home and it's far better than going hungry, but for people who have access to fresh, nutritious food, it leaves a lot to be desired.
I send breakfast daily and I use to send lunch, but right now I'm letting it pass because I'm tired and daycare costs too much to start with. My crazy kid wants to know why I'm not packing her lunch, she wants food mama makes not school lunch. I love her
It's a private school. I think they do it as a way to ensure they have enough purchases to justify serving. PreK has to buy all year and K, the first semester. The school only goes to 3rd grade. They "sell it" as a way to expand their horizons and of course a 4 yr old will say they don't like something before trying it.
It's not obviously unhealthy stuff, like iced cinnamon roll for breakfast. It's things I know my kid doesn't eat. I don't like red beans and rice and neither does he. Every other Monday it is served. We have talked about pulling out the sausage and eating what he does like but it's still frustrating to know I could pack him a sandwich and be done. Hotdogs and corn.
He keeps telling me the Mac and cheese is too cheesy which is blasphemy. I know I could get a DRs note but I have too many battles right now so I just give him a heavy breakfast and have a heavy snack in the car after school.

I think the lunches are pretty balanced here. They let them have chocolate milk every day, though. And I have seen sun chips included. And aside from spongy deli meat for sandwiches, it tastes okay. Usually it's a main dish, veggie, fruit, dairy or small side.
Believe it or not that cinnamon roll fits some guideline or another because it has "whole grains" in it.
Honestly the breakfast sucks, but I'm really impressed with the lunches at our local school. Salad bar daily, looks like actual food. They still have pizza day, but the their and beg with our looks better.

Yeah our lunch menu looks somewhat decent. But breakfast is horrendous.
They wouldn't let the PTA give a pizza party to the class with the highest fundraiser sales without a million approvals but they can serve frosting for breakfast. Hokay.
To answer a question up thread, No, the kids don't have to eat at school. They provide a free breakfast to any kid who wants to come eat. DS loves eating in the cafeteria so I drop him off in time for breakfast. He actually eats at home too because we don't leave for school until 9:40 and he can't wait that long to eat. So it's more like a snack for him but I'm sure for some kids this is their while breakfast
Our school offers free breakfast and lunch and the choices surprisingly aren't that bad. They do have pizza once a month but otherwise they are required to offer a grain, protein, fruit and/or vegetable and a dairy product. They even have a full salad bar for lunch.
I'm just jealous of people who have the option to buy lunch at school; that's not a thing here, so when DS starts school I'll have to pack him a lunch every damn day. Being able to buy it sometimes would be a nice break from that.
I'm lucky because I can order ds lunch through a company contracted with the school. There is an app and multiple choices per day. All good and fresh ingredients and balanced but it is a private school in an affluent area so that's part of it. He also gets good snacks too. It's sad because breakfast at school is all some kids will get and you would think they would have better offerings

So they don't have school lunch at all, or am I missing something?

That really sucks. Our school lunches might not be what I would prefer my kid to eat but for some kids- the ones on free/reduced lunch- they depend on that meal.

Nope - if you stay at school for lunch you need to bring your own lunch from home.
It was that way when I went to school too. I think once a month they had special "pizza days" or "McDonalds days" or whatever, but that was the only time you could buy a lunch. I don't know if they still do that kind of thing now, but elementary schools here don't have a cafeteria, and no food for sale.

It may be that in certain cities/regions, they have some kind of program (I remember when I was volunteering at an elementary school during university they had a breakfast (aka cereal) program, and a lot of the kids there were very low income), but I don't know of any elementary schools that have a regular cafeteria, food for purchase, etc. for all kids.
Wow, I didn't realized some schools didn't have cafeterias at all. While we do not utilize ours, there is a full lunch w/ several options daily. Of course plenty of free & reduced lunches are served, not sure the percentage.
Someone at dance was talking about the breakfast and the mom said that all the kids MUST take a juice. And that it's considered a fruit. I was a bit shocked.

At DS's school juice is an option but they don't have to take it. If it was 100% juice, no sugar added I wouldn't have much issue with it though because of all the things I've seen on the menu, that wouldn't be my hill to die on. At breakfast they can have milk, juice or water.
But they do count applesauce as a fruit and it's not the natural no sugar added kind. Which I have an issue with

Not cool quesyrah I would not be ok with that. Can you send breakfast or feed your kids before school? I know I'll go back to packing some meals and snacks next year when the kids are back in daycare, but if the school were charging me for crappy meals I would not be accepting and paying for them. I'm sorry your school sucks like this.

He does eat breakfast at home so this is more like a snack for him. He likes eating in the cafeteria so I let him. But I know for some kids that's their only breakfast.
