EVELOPING: Multiple people were shot Friday near the Empire State building in Manhattan, the New York City Police Department confirmed to FoxNews.com. Authorities would not say how many victims were shot. The New York City Fire Department said "several people" were injured in the shooting, which happened at 9:07 a.m. on 34th and 5th Avenue. One gunman has been taken into custody, WABC-TV reported.
Well now, I guess we are going ot have a rash of shootings since the Dark Knight.
Sadly, they happen every day in this country. Hell, I live in a nice, quiet, safe suburb of Austin, and we had a shooting here this week that sent 4 people to the hospital. It happened during the night after a group of people met up for a planned fight and someone started shooting. If you're going to have widespread access to guns, people are going to get shot.
And my crazy FB friend has somehow already blamed this on Bloomberg. Her post "Bloomberg, you suck. NYC is going back to the dark ages!" Uhm, okay. Probably just some really random mentally ill person but that's okay, go on with blaming Bloomberg.
Very sad for the bystander that was killed and the others who were shot. I hope the wounded make full recoveries.

I agree with your comment about gun access for sure. But mass shootings and gun violence in general are slightly different IMO. Both horrible, but someone walking in and killing or trying to kill a bunch of random people is different from a gang member shooting at a rival gang.
This is awful. That area is PACKED at 9:00 am. It's a wonder more people weren't killed. Thank goodness for the cop's quick shot.
NY Post is reporting that the killer stalked an old co-worker in the area and then shot him dead. Then he went on to shoot innocent bystanders, one of whom died. There are no words.

WTF is wrong with people? I mean, really, what could a co-worker POSSIBLY do that the deserve to be shot?
I also agree with mcgee. But wouldn't want to fuck with the 2nd Amendment!

The Westboro Baptist Church should be round up and shot. But wouldn't want to fuck with the 1st amendment!
There was a shooting in San Jose last night too. They don't know if it was gang-related or what. Not on the national news. Anything that happens in midtown Manhattan is automatically important to the rest of the world.

I'm going to guess that the gun used in the shooting was purchased in a state with lax gun laws like Virginia or Georgia and not New York. I could be wrong, but it's my guess.
My dad just called and warned me to stay uptown today. Good thing, too, bc I was about to take the baby and go down to 34th. I had no idea.
I think of this more along the lines of someone going postal and not "NY in the 70s" type crime. Still horrible, but I'm not worried about the crime rate going up.

And nearly every day in Richmond and Oakland and they don't always make local news. But at least in Oakland they publish how many homicides there are a year.

I can think of plenty of things folks you work with can do to drive you crazy enough to want to shoot up the place even though I wouldn't do it. Random people though? I got nothing.

That's what I don't get. I mean, shooting people who actually did you wrong, while wrong, is something I can comprehend. But why would you just shoot at random people?
