He may not wear it, but he might like to have it in his room. It looks very cool and it'll remind him of you. It's a very thoughtful gift and hopefully he appreciates all the time you put into it.
Ah. So is my nephew, who is starting to have opinions about everything.
i say keep going. I'm sure he'll think it's cool, even if he never wears it, and hopefully his parents will impress upon him that you spent time to make him something special.
Unfortunately, I think at that age, regardless if they're a boy or a girl, kids don't really appreciate clothing items for gifts. I would try not to take it personally. I'd just proceed with it and know that you made an awesome gift. Even if he doesn't wear it regularly now, I'm sure he'll keep it around and might wear it when he's older and wiser!
I would continue with it and even if he doesn't wear it right now, he may as he gets older. At the very least, it looks cool and he can keep it in his room like a PP said.
I think clothing gifts for kids that age are hard. I think, when I was 8, I don't know that I would have truly appreciated someone knitting me something awesome like I should have, but as I got older, I would have loved that gift. It may take him a bit, but I think he will really appreciate it some day.
I say finish it. Even if he doesn't wear it I think he'll keep it around his room whereas a beanie he'd probably just lose (or "lose") or just shove somewhere and forget it. I think he may think this is actually cool though, of course he probably wouldn't admit that...

How close are you to being done? If you still have a ways to go, I think I would scrap it.
ETA: Not destroy it, but either put it aside or finish it for someone else. I'd hate to put a bunch of work into something that his mom thinks he won't like.

I'd finish it for him. I mean, it's camo. It has "snake" right in the name. He may not use it THIS year (I bet he will though) but within the next couple of seasons he's going to love having it.
Is it a tube of some kind? I can't tell by the picture, but it looks like fun to make.
I'm pretty sure my second grader (who also loves tractors and snakes) would think it was cool. "Cool" clothing has generally been well received by him.
It's a risk, but I think there is a greater chance of your nephew liking it than not.
Many 8 year olds I know are very picky. Some insist on Under Armor stuff, others have different preferences. (And most, it seems, never want to wear jeans.) If his mom says he's picky, she's probably right...she had to buy his school clothes!
Kids are weird, though. You never know what they'll like and what they won't. An 8 year old won't appreciate the time/effort you put in it, no matter how much they love it...but their parents will! I wouldn't scrap it, but I would try to prepare myself for a potential lackluster reaction when he opens it. I think chances are good that he'll like it.
I think a scarf for an 8 year old was pretty risky anyway. But to make it into a camo colored snake is pretty cool. If you were willing to invest the time before, don't let your mom's comments stop you.
So it really does look like a snake. If you're worried about if he'd like it, maybe keep knitting it skinny and stuff it so it becomes a homemade stuffed snake?
ETA: and it looks like the unfinished part might be wide. You could put a stuffed animal in there like the snake just ate it. sorry if this is a lame suggestion.
