Why are (some) white people so obsessed with dressing up as other races/cultures/ethnicities?
Weird.
I think it's relayed to that whole not feeling like we have a culture thing. Were you here for that thread?
Huh. I hadn't thought of that, but the thing that really gets me is that it's often done to disrespect/make fun of.
Yeah, I recall that thread.
It's strange, though. African slaves had their culture stripped from them, so they created new traditions. They didn't appropriate other groups' cultural traditions to make fun of other races/ethnicities.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
Where do you people live that this is coming up over and over again? Granted, I live in a diverse neighborhood full of people with brains, but I have never once in reality had an adult think blackface or something like this is acceptable.
Honestly until the other night I would have never thought it was something I would see. I live in an blue state, and often felt proud that my state seemed more progressive on social issues. Most of my friends are college educated and socially liberal, they support gay marriage, abortion rights, etc. I think, for myself, it is a good reminder how pervasive white privilege and systemic racism is; even for Democrats.
@slayerkate should reply with something short and bitchy:
Hi, I just wanted to send a quick email to let you know that Cultural Misappropriation is a form of racism. Don't worry because I know you aren't being racist on purpose. This area is a little rural and I find that people here don't always know these things.

Link to this thread - because not feeling like we have a culture makes no sense to me. We are steeped in our culture; of course we don't "feel it". (or maybe that's your point -- which is why I'm curious to read the thread)
I agree this is offensive. However, I know in my area it has only recently come to light that it is offensive. It used to be perfectly okay to dress up as Indians, "hobos," etc. For Halloween. This is no longer tolerated.
"Hobo" and Native American aren't in the same category of offensiveness.

So, I'm really tired so there may be a comprehension fail here, but what do you mean by the bolded? That generally Democrats recognize privilege and systemic racism which leads to the contrast that Republicans don't?

I apologize that wasn't clear. I meant it is a good reminder, for me, that even among Democrats issues of privilege and systemic racism can be ignored. Especially in a community as white washed as my own. Just a statement of sadness about the lack of awareness I see in my community. Hopefully that makes sense.

It still seems like you're saying that Democrats corner the market on issues of privilege and systemic racism. I don't think that is a fair statement. While I concede that the very vocal minority seem willfully ignorant, but I don't think a sweeping generalization is fair.

Am I misinterpreting?
I'm reminded of an article posted here a while back about racism in the PNW being worse than the South. I was reflecting on those racial undercurrents and the juxtaposition of our state being more progressive on other issues.
I do not believe democrats corner the market, and I take your point that perhaps I should not make generalizations about one particular party.
