When I was maybe a couple weeks post-partum, I came across this article that talked about CrossFit/heavy lifting and the issues it causes with the progression of normal labor. Something to do with it inhibiting the pelvic floor from fully dilating.
This was very interesting to me because I had a 27 hour labor and never fully dilated. They ended up doing an emergency c-section because they couldn't get my cervix past 9.5 cm. I did CrossFit and continued to lift pretty heavy until about 39.5 weeks.
Anyway, I think the article was a PDF, but I can't remember anything else about it. I somehow lost track of the article and I'd really like to actually read it now that I'm a touch more functional than I was 6 months ago.
So, long shot, but has anyone heard of anything like this? I've tried googling and haven't gotten anywhere.
I did crossfit before/throughout my pregnancy and never fully dilated, not even close.
So I am very interested in this!
I realllly wish I could find it. It came up somehow, maybe fb, not sure. Anyway, it was shortly after I had DS and I scanned it quickly. The situation in the article was nearly identical to mine. It seemed pretty legit with the way it was written and the accompanying anatomy diagrams.
Won't stop me from doing CrossFit. I plan on doing a repeat c-section for the next one because I don't want to chance going through that labor experience again.
I googled high and low for it and can't find a thing. I'm always curious to hear more information about vigorous exercise during pregnancy. I was not doing CrossFit during my pregnancy, but I was doing fairly intense bootcamp workouts including using 30-40lb dumbbells through my pregnancy with DS. My labor was straightforward and quick.

I thought that doing squats was supposed to make labor easier (not a mom, don't know what "easier" means, I just have this in my head for some reason!), so this is surprising to me.

That's my understanding as well. This article didn't necessarily refute that (to my recollection), but it did say that for some women, doing squats with heavy weight can cause the pelvic floor muscles to tense up and they don't release like they should when you go into labor. Or something like that.
I'm bummed no one else can find it. I swear I didn't make it up! lol

Yeah, I mean it's obviously very individual. My coach's water broke while she was doing overhead squats in the gym and her labor was very fast.
My doctor was shocked that my labor went the way it did, so I think she expected it to be pretty easy for me.

Interesting.
As a heavy lifter, I had a 36+ hour labor the first time that ended in a c-section at 42 weeks. With my second, I was hoping to VBAC but at 41 weeks and no sign of labor, I had a repeat c section.
BUT, as a coach, my clients have been the exact opposite. Seriously. Fast labors, no meds, felt great, etc. Like, we just had a huge baby boom-6 clients gave birth within 2 months, and all credited CrossFit with their labors being so uncomplicated, etc. In 5.5 years, that is the story I've gotten from clients probably 9 times out of 10.
Definitely share if you find it-sounds interesting!
