Not what I was expecting, but ok, I'm interested. And my mind is blown now that I was just trying to figure out where I know that one actress from - That is DAWN from Mad Men who was also Coco from Dear White People. I spent all of Dear White People trying to figure out why she was so familiar to me.
Also, I digress, but after just immersing myself in 2 1/2 seasons of Being Mary Jane, I am so here for all these Black actors getting work. That is all.
The plot of Spike Lee‘s forthcoming film Chi-Raq probably isn’t the first thing you expected off the strength of its title. Nevertheless, the movie’s trailer will surely have you interested thanks to engaging dialogue, wild cameos, Black Power feminists and some gunplay.
Oh yeah, Dave Chappelle and Sam Jackson, too. As for the film itself, turns out it’s based on ancient Greek play called “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes. The OG play is a comedy where Lysistrata tries to end the Peloponnesian War.
In this Spike Lee joint, Lysistrata wants to get guns off the streets of the Southside of Chicago after a child is murdered by a stray bullet. We can dig it.
Chi-Raq is in theaters December 4. Watch the trailer below.
Do you not like the original story, or that they've tried to update it?
Admittedly I know nothing about the original story.
Ah, it's an old greek play. The commercial pretty much gives you the basics, Lysistrata leads the women in various greek cities to go on a sex strike and take over the treasury to get the men folk to stop a war that's been going on for too long. But everyone comes together in the end for singing, dancing, and fornicating. It's an interesting one.
