Hi all, I've been lurking for a long time now and thought I'd come out of the woodworks. I live in the PNW. I am married, no kids, 2 cats, and hopefully a dog soon. I do a lot of animal rescues (I admit it, I prefer animals over people). I've been hesitant to join the boards because I'm (moderately) conservative and acknowledge this isn't what the majority of the board supports, but you guys also seem open minded, so maybe I'll be welcome here. I do thoroughly enjoy perusing the boards and maybe be part of this community. Sometime soon, I'll learn how to do signatures and all that jazz... DoggyDays
Welcome! What part of the PNW? There are lots of us in Seattle on here.
Thanks! I'm actually up in Alaska. I know flex (and probably more gbcners) live up here, so I'm not going to post my hometown as it's tiny, but it's not Anchorage

Then why did you say you're in the PNW? Because Alaska is not that.
Well, I wanted to be a little more general. My town is small and I don't know how big the GBCN board is. Let's say NPNW

Wiki says it can include Alaska.
Yeah, some people think it is, some people don't. I guess when speaking in general (like talking about regions in the USA), I consider part of the PNW, but if you're being more specific....well, ok, we're the last frontier. Either way, we're part of the US...which surprisingly not many Americans realize. I've even had comments about how it's an island (?!)....because that's the way it looks on some maps

What do you mean by "conservative"? Are we talking Sarah Palin conservative? Rand Paul conservative? Trump conservative? Ted Cruz conservative? Conservative for the pacific northwest - ie. occasionally eat something that isn't vegan organic?

Lol, moderately, not extreme! Maybe I'll get into it more as the forums progress, but I know I'm stepping in new territory and don't wish to engage in conflicts or arguments. I've been debating for months whether to introduce myself on here, but decided I'll just step back from any political conversation which mostly seems to happen in the CEP forum anyway. Sure, Canada Russia...I mean, after all, I can see Russia from my house.
peninsula? pretty much...I have a lot of friends/family from ANC down to the end of the road, so I don't doubt we have at least a few friends in common.

What do you think of our gum wall? Why aren't you doing an AMA?
I haven't been to the gum wall...but I really hate gum. I can't stand people talking to me while chewing gum and I don't chew gum. It's definitely not somewhere I'd go see.
I didn't even think do to an AMA! Are you from Seattle too? There's a lot of people from there on here!! Great city.

When I traveled through, so many Alaskans told me that most Americans "from the contiguous 48" didn't realize/ remember Alaska was a state or that they thought it was an island. I don't know who's perpetuating this myth, but I don't know a single person under these delusions. I'm sure there are people like this out there, but they are likely these same ones who can't pick out the shape of their own state or name their state capital.

My H was born and raised in Anchorage. My ILs have since moved to a tiny town in SE AK and live on a houseboat. You can walk around the entire town in less than half an hour. They love it.
Thanks all for the welcome. The reason I mentioned my political affiliation was because this board prides itself in being open minded. I was curious to see if that would extend to welcoming someone that might have different viewpoints than the popular opinion on this board. Clearly, it wasn't, so I'm left to think it's rather hypocritical behavior. But for those who were truly welcoming, thank you. Also, yes, they are lots of people who think Alaska is an island or not part of the US. I worked in customer service with visitors for many years before pursuing my current career. You would be flabbergasted to hear the sort of questions I would get on a regular basis, including ones asking if I actually lived in Alaska or commuted from Washington every day for work. I also recently went to New England just for a trip where I was also asked such questions about Alaska. You may not see it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
I feel that the ONLY entities that view Alaska as a separate country are the online retailers. I've been APPALLED at the amount of shipping charges they add on because I live in Alaska (I know Hawaii has the same problem).
Sometimes I ship stuff to my mom in Oregon in order to avoid undue costs.

I think these boards are more progressive rather than open-minded.
I'm LOL that she seems to think open-minded means we have to be open to any viewpoint, even if it's the WRONG ONE! I'm thinking of social equality issues mostly.
See, this is where I'm appalled. So because I have different viewpoints, it's the WRONG one? Yet you embrace different religions, races, backgrounds, etc. and there is NO wrong one of those. How is this any different? Nevermind this, as for a board that is supposedly welcoming, I feel like it's like being back in high school. I am reminded once again why I prefer animals over people.
