(CBS News) In an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley on Friday, Mitt Romney played down the remarks he made about President Obama's origins, arguing that they amounted to a joke and not a "swipe" at the president.
"No, no, not a swipe," Romney said. "I've said throughout the campaign and before, there's no question about where he was born. He was born in the U.S. This was fun about us, and coming home. And humor, you know -- we've got to have a little humor in a campaign."
Romney was on the campaign trail in his home state of Michigan Friday when he made a crack at the "birther" suspicions that ultimately drove Mr. Obama to release his long-form birth certificate to prove he was born in the United States.
"I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital. I was born in Harper Hospital," Romney said in Commerce, Michigan earlier Friday. "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised." www.cbsnews.com/8301-18563_162-57500130/romney-says-birther-joke-wasnt-a-swipe-at-obama/
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
If he had said something like "At least you guys aren't asking for my birth certificate, haha" I could have bought the joke thing. But no, that is not what he said. He specifically pointed out that both himself and his wife were born there, and that "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."
He wants to have it both ways. Wink wink, nudge nudge to the birthers, but still trying to appear sane to the rest of us. Like Sibil referenced, the lineup of the convention tells me all I need to know about whether there are huge factions of the Republican Party that are eating this shit up.

This is how I feel. He's trying to appease some of these extreme factions and then act like he's actually not doing that at all. It's insulting in a way.
Not funny? Yes, but I didn't even think birther until here as much as a ploy for MI votes. I am so tired of this campaign and all the shit slinging it has brought (death, Mediscare, whatever)
