About a minute in I decided to find out if the pie was available close to me, it is. Would it be rude to start singing "On My Own" like the guy in the video of anyone tries to share with me?
I've bought a sweet potato pie before and it was okay. Not as good as homemade though. I have never purchased a Patti pie. The woman can cook though. For good southern desserts I typically turn to Mama Dip or Bill Neal.
You don't buy sweet potato pies. You go find the little old lady whose kids call her Madea and ask her to bake you one.
My Madea made a sweet potato pie that was to DIE for. Rest her soul. I now make one that is exactly like it. I almost had a fight at church because my mom heard I made pies and didn't bring her one. My niece told her mom flat out that "No offense mom, but Tee-Tee Nita's pie is better than yours."

My DH loves sweet potato pie. He makes his own, complete with homemade crust. My dd is so hooked that when she gets in trouble she tells me not to take her pie. It's too cute but the addition in this house is ridiculous!!

And now I want pie.
We don't usually have sweet potato pie for thanksgiving since I make an sweet potato side dish that's basically masquerading as dinner but tastes of dessert. But now I want pie.

We have this too. My grandma makes this sweet potato pone that is so good. But that has nothing to do with pie. That is dinner. Ha. Even though H says it tastes like pie filling.
I am going to have to find me a Patti pie. I love some sweet potato pie, but I don't make one. I have this amazing bakery right down the street and we get desserts there sometimes.
I'm going to try making one for the first time this year. I'm going to try to buy one just in case, lol. I should ask my sister to make one just in case the first two are terrible. Maybe my greedy butt will eat all 3 regardless of taste
The secret is to taste the batter as you go. Start with a basic recipe, then add cinnamon and sugar really to taste. This will get it just right!
Here's my pie recipe along with notes:
This is my basic starting point:
3 cups mashed sweet potatoes
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 stick butter (softened)
1 can (14oz) of Eagle Brand Condensed Milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
2 Deep Dish Pie Shells
I use around 4 large sweet potatoes. I BAKE my sweet potatoes first (not boil). Some people boil them; I don't because they seem to be sweeter baked. Bake until soft, allow to cool, and then peel (the skin comes right off) and mash the potatoes in a large bowl. Mix half of the can of milk and 1 cup of the sugar into the potatoes. You'll want the mixture cool before you had the eggs. Add the eggs and mix well. Then add the butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
Taste the mixture. Yes. I said taste it. You get to decide how sweet you want it. Add more condensed milk and sugar. Blend until smooth.
Pour equal amounts of the batter into the two pie shells and bake at 350 degrees until pies are set. (about 35 minutes)
Note: These pies are by trial and error. I once attempted to make a pie straight from a recipe. I failed. Over the years, I just take a starting point and go from there. I usually don't use an entire can of condensed milk. Normally, I use about 3/4 of a can. If you want more cinnamon - add more. I don't typically overdo the nutmeg, so just a teaspoon there.
Oh, there's a west Indian sweet potato dish that can be turned into a pie. It's amazing.
I don't know if it's b/c I'm from the Caribbean or went to college in the South, but sweet potato pie is wonderful. I've only ever had it made by white people, though. Maybe I'm missing a lot? I can't imagine it being any better, but I'm open to people giving me pie to tempt me.
My Mema (grandmother) makes an UH-Mahzing sweet potato pie! She mails me 2 pies every thanksgiving (along with 7Up cake - it is also amazing). She is 83 and in the hospital right now. She is extremely upset that she may not be out in time to mail me pie for Thanksgiving. I love that lady.... She hasn't given me her recipe but I've watched and helped enough over the years to know how to make it. Its basically Nita's recipe with a gallon of sugar.
All that to say that I will never buy pie from the store.
Great...just great. Now I want some Patti Pie. I have 4 more hours of sitting in this silly cubicle and pie is on my mind. It's going to be a long afternoon.

Wait what? Are you saying maybe white people cant make pie?
This reminds me of when my stepdaughter's boyfriend said he knew the tea wouldn't be good at a restaurant because there weren't any black people working there. Dude!
NO! I'm saying I already love pie. So, if there's something even better that comes from Madea, then I WANT!
My mother makes THE BEST sweet potato pie. They really are not hard to make, so I don't know why hers are so much better than anyone else's I've ever had. I know Patti can cook, but I have a hard time believing store bought pie can be that great.
I also love a good sweet potato pone. I do not eat sweet potatoes unless they're combined with a lot of butter and sugar and it's a holiday. lol.

Aww, poor Mema.
This is where I am. He made it sound delicious, but both my grandmothers would hop out of their graves to hunt me down if I bought a sweet potato pie from a store. It just doesn't even sound right lol.

This is even worse than i thought! Condensed milk and sweet potatoes #vomdotcom
So then I guess you're really not here for bean pies? Missing out on both counts !
I would rather die that eat bean pie!
What the hell is bean pie?
I just asked my BIL if we were having collards for thanksgiving. He acted as if I have 2 heads. I now have to goon a search for collards.[/quote] Girl. I have this braised collard greens recipe that is. DA BOMB DOT COM.
I've let go of the traditional method of cooking them. This right here is LIFE!!
I can't believe that sweet potato pie is where AAs and West Indians/Africans have to part ways . Music, politics, fashion, all good. Sweet potato pie? Diasporan drama, honey!

. Hahaha you got Bajans around you?
Most other folks call it a kiss teet and I think Trinis say chups.
Not anymore, but I thought it was universal because I know Bajans say it, Trinis say it and my Belizean friend says it too, but she married into a big Jamaican family so I don't know if she brought it with her or picked it up from her in-laws. I always just called it sucking my teeth (I think that's pretty typical phrasing for AAs).
socratic, that's very Americanized of you guys lol. You might love some sweet potato pie !

Technically we (Bermudians) are not west indian. Many of us have wi roots (my family is Jamaican,Trinidadian,Bahamian and St.Kittian) so a lot of the west indian terms are lost on us.
Ahh, interesting. What are you? Caribbean? I've never been clear on that because I know how close you guys are to North Carolina, so you are are not actually in/adjacent to the Caribbean Sea, kind of like Bahamians, right?

Just Bermudian...British dependent citizen is what my passport says. If our government was smart they would take lessons from the Carribean on things like education instead of trying to copy America... I.e. middle school and the no child left behind guy that we hired.
Oh gosh @the idea that anyone would look at our education system and think we know what we're doing lol!
