We have friends who do house cleaning professionally, so we hired them to deep clean the new house yesterday because our sellers didn't bother to clean it at all.
It took them eight hours. EIGHT HOURS. Even with the discount they gave us, we could have bought a new TV with the amount of money we ended up paying them to clean. They were pretty sure the house hadn't been properly cleaned in years. It took them three hours just to get the kitchen appliances clean (inside and out). The before/after pictures are ridiculous. They had to call in one of their specialty carpet cleaners because their regular machines weren't enough to get everything out of the carpets.
I don't feel like it was a waste of money at all because it looks great now and I didn't have the energy to do that amount of cleaning myself, but I'm definitely annoyed that the house was dirty enough to require that much cleaning.
Next up, all of the walls need to be patched and repainted because they're all grimy, dinged, dented, scratched, full of holes, etc. We just have to pick out paint colors first.
melsamoony - I am usually the last person to judge house cleaning efforts, because we don't have a great history with keeping up with cleaning. But this was like... obvious mold, dead bugs INSIDE the fridge, years of build-up everywhere, etc. They very clearly packed their stuff, loaded it into a truck, and left it as is. We didn't know what to expect, but our realtor was really annoyed that they hadn't bothered to even attempt to clean, so I'm assuming that isn't normal around here.

I've been tempted to hire someone to clean because it wasn't really that clean in here either when we moved in and I've been to lazy to really clean. We shampooed the carpets and used some wood treatment stuff on the wood floors, but there's just a lot of dust and stuff everywhere, nothing too bad. I mean, the house is over 100 years old so that's to be expected lol. But yeah we definitely can't afford it Glad it's nice and clean for you now though!
@moonbeam - Behind the appliances wasn't too bad, actually. It was inside the appliances that was the worst! The dishwasher was so gross, I can't imagine how they expected it to be cleaning their dishes. We know they used it, though, because it was full every time we did a walk-through.
estrellita - We weren't expecting to pay as much as we did, but it was worth every penny. I've been struggling so much with my health lately that I don't have the energy to even imagine attempting to do that much cleaning myself. Our house is 50 years old so we definitely expected some issues, but it was out of control.

Sorry they left the house in such rough conditions for you guys. That was really messed up and I don't think normal at all.
In regards to the dishwasher, we hand wash all our dishes and place in the dishwasher as a "drying rack". Maybe that's what they did? Unlikely though since they seem more on the lazy side.
Glad the house is nice and clean for you guys now even though you had to pay a ton of money to get it done. Good luck with the rest of the moving process and making your new house a home!
A: that is disgusting. Some people live in such filth. Not cleaning behind appliances is normal. Having a moldy dishwasher is just awful.
B: That was money well spent. I would take a truly clean house over a TV any day.
Our previous owner didn't clean one room and I've kept the door shut and am just getting to it this week. I keep gagging and trying to figure out how they lived with dirt literally sitting on their walls. I'm so glad the rest was clean!
Yikes, sounds so gross but definitely money well spent! Now the house should feel more like home, knowing it's been professionally deep cleaned. When do you move in?
Ew. Glad y'all got it cleaned. We're debating on whether to hire cleaners for the new house. It's about 45 years old and has been vacant since January.
Here it's not unusual to ask the seller to clean the house/carpets before you take possession. For whatever reason we said don't worry about it. Well that's something I regretted the day we moved in.
To be fair to the last owners the house was deep cleaned before we saw the place. (Cleaned a few times when it was listed, as it was empty/listed for a year before we saw it.) once our offer went in they never cleaned it again. (Only was dusty from sitting empty for 3 months from us seeing the house until move in date.)
