One of the women in the Obama campaign's new video of Republicans supporting the president because of GOP positions on women's rights appears not to be a Republican at all.
Maria Ciano who is featured in the web video has been a registered Democrat since October 2006 according to voter registration records.
"People like me and my family have realized that the Republican Party once was inline with our views, but are no longer," the Colorado resident says in the video.
The video is one component of a larger Obama campaign push on women in light of the recent controversy surrounding Todd Akin.

Do we have more information on this? Where in Colorado is she? Were there heavily contested Republican primaries? How long was she registered as a Republican before becoming registered as a Democrat in 2006? Did she actually vote in Democratic primaries every year? It's hard to know whether this is actually disingenuous without more information on this woman's political background.
I'm honestly not all that familiar with the whole registered partisan concept because all my primary voting has occurred in an open primary state. I show up and vote in whichever primary I want, no registering required.
Thanks. That wasn't clear from the text on buzzfeed. I'd have to install a newer version of Flash to be able to play videos, and I don't trust this thing to be able to handle that.

I think the bolded is key. (didn't watch the video)... is she 70 and she switched parties in 2006, because she didn't like the direction of the R party and was all into Obama... or is she 26 and became a D pretty much right out of the gate?
He also notes that Ciano's Facebook page indicates that she "likes" a number of far-left wing organizations, including Think Progress, MoveOn.org and the Sierra Club.
Her mom is also in the video, and is all over her Facebook page saying things like Rachel Maddow is her favorite show and referring to republicans as "the idiots"
Mostly this amuses me because DH's firm makes ads with real people and they actually do a background/Internet check on them complete with Facebook likes, etc. This is sloppy campaign work at best, intentionally misleading at worst.
This is really, really stupid of the campaign to not vet these people first of all, or at the very least, tell them they had to lock down their Facebook pages.

I voted for Bush once, and I thought democrat was a dirty word. And I pretty much switched my voting habits solely due to women's issues. It's only been in the last 5 years or so that I've become a more well rounded liberal. In a family which is still staunchly republican.
I would never have watched maddow during my liberal pro choice but apathetic about politics days, but now I want to marry her.
So, yeah, I buy it. Still, dumb move in the campaign's part.

I don't know... Dovetailing off SBP, I think it's targeting a large segment of young people who leave the nest with a particular political identity that they really know nothing about. Most kids can't vote until college, so this might be the first time they're paying any attention. The party differences WRT women's issues are pretty stark, and just because mom and dad are Republican doesn't mean they are, too.
I'm sure my grandma would be a Republican Woman for Obama. She's been a registered republican for her entire life but sometime during Reagan she couldn't take it any more. She refuses to switch parties though because she's holding out hope that the party will come back to its senses. She would choke if she had to call herself an actual democrat. Lol.

All I can contribute to this conversation is: Move out the way, she is mine.
