I do think that "war on Christmas" was a thing before this *points up there* got a hold of it. I have observed people being upset about it since I can remember.
I think this was kind of what happened to the Starbucks cup, too. Someone makes a comment, a few crazy people jump on it (the people who had the baristas writing "Merry Christmas" on their cups) and suddenly "there is outrage!!!!" In reality, I saw probably 50x's more people outraged because people were outraged about the stupid cups than I did people who didn't like the cups.

The point . . . . . . . . . . . wambam
I don't know if you have memories of the 80's, but it wasn't a thing then at all. People were absolutely fine with Happy Holidays, because that greeting/wish encompasses everything celebrated this time of year, from Thanksgiving through New Year's. It was only in the 90's or so that people started bitching about it on a larger scale.

Well I only lived 2 years in the 80s so no. But what I was saying was that I think it was a thing before social media made it a thing.

We're in agreement then. It absolutely predates social media but the media was working to foster this outrage prior to that. It isn't a recent thing, news reports (specifically starting with Bill O'Reilly and then spreading from there) have talked about "The War on Christmas" for at least 15+ years or so. Social media just serves to inflame said outrage much quicker every year.
Because apparently wishing someone Happy Holidays is akin to this:
