I found a great house listing on MLS last night This morning on the news there was a shootng down the street. It may have been a one off (there was a shooting at the Empire State Building) but it definitely makes you have ti consider more things.
I don't know about Canada, but in the U.S., you can go to the police precinct website and see crime statistics for the neighborhood. We did this when we were househunting.

there's a website - crimereports.com. I suspect it wouldn't be terribly helpful in a large city.
I'm of the belief that unless you want to live in the middle of the corn fields by yourself, crime happens everywhere and there's not a whole lot you can do about it. You just have to decide how much you're willing to put up with. For us, we lived in a city most people on here wouldn't dream of living in, and never had a problem. Even though there was crime around us, it mostly stayed out of the neighborhoods that were relatively nicer.
I agree with thatgirl. I live in a " bad" city, but in the nicer part. My neighborhood is incredibly safe, and almost cloistered feeling ( like we have no contact with the bad part of the city whatsoever.) If it weren't for the schools, it would be the perfect neighborhood, cheap, safe, friendly and convienent. We are considering Catholic Schools so we can stay.
