I went to high school in CSprings, and a classmate is related to the officer who was killed. It's such a senseless tragedy. And I'm so annoyed at my conservative classmates saying now isn't the time to politicize. Ugh.

also, ESF, do you think that asshole believes Palestinians have "legitimate concerns" when they lob missiles? Or do only white Planned Parenthood shooters have "legitimate concerns" that trigger their violence?
I just can't help but be irritated that the word terrorism is cool to use during an active shooting and bombing in Paris, but when some assholes shoot up a black church or a BLM protest or a PP clinic, we have to wait for all the facts.

Daily Beast is reporting he was from Black Mountain and Swannanoa, NC with numerous charges/police incidents ranging from DV to animal abuse to being a peeping tom. So he's from an area chock full of assholes with a history of being one himself.

It's never a time to politicize when their side would be shown to be wrong.

Yeah I posted last night some random news source (Heavy) had this. But mainstream media? Newp.
Which party doesn't care about police officers, again?
The silence from the usual "police lives matter" crowd on my FB feed has been absolutely deafening.
As someone who inconsistently checks/posts FB, I know I can't expect everyone to post about everything that happens, and that would be unfair of me to do. But the same damn people always quick to change their profile pics anytime an officer is killed in the line of duty haven't done a damn thing to honor the officer killed yesterday. Either #bluelivesmatter when black people shoot them or #bluelivesmatter when they're not answering a call for help from an abortion clinic. I fucking hate people.

Of course not. That would require actual journalism.
Pro-life regulars in Colorado Springs say shooting suspect is unknown to them By: Debbie Kelley

The suspected gunman in Friday's shooting at Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, Robert Lewis Dear Jr., was not a protester at the clinic, said Joseph Martone Jr., one of the regulars who attends weekly prayer services outside the building on Centennial Boulevard.
Dear surrendered to police Friday after a five-hour standoff during which three people were killed and nine were injured. He is being held without bond in the El Paso County Jail.
Martone said Dear's name was not familiar to members of the Colorado Springs Respect Life group that meets twice weekly at the Planned Parenthood for Mass, on the mornings the clinic reportedly does surgical abortions.
"Nobody seems to know him," Martone said.
Park County sheriffs obtained a search warrant for Dear's house in Hartsel Saturday morning and had closed it off, according to tweets.

Voter registration records for Dear in Park County, from Colorado Voters Info, show he is registered as an Unaffiliated female, listed as a "she" and considered an "active voter."
Dear, 57, originally was from South Carolina and also lived in North Carolina. He has arrest records in both states, including two counts of cruelty to animals in 2002. Court records show he was found not guilty during a bench trial for the misdemeanor charges. He also faced peeping tom charges 2002 in Colleton, S.C., but the charges were dismissed.
In 1997, records show police in Walterboro, S.C., interviewed Dear's wife, who said he allegedly hit her and pushed her out of a window, causing minor injury. She did not press charges.
The Associated Press is reporting that Dear had lived part of the time in a cabin with no electricity or running water in the North Carolina mountains.
Neighbors in Black Mountain said Dear kept mostly to himself. But James Russell said when Dear did talk, it was a rambling combination of a number of topics that didn't make sense together, and he tended to avoid eye contact.
Two topics Russell told the Associated Press he never heard Dear talk about were religion or abortion.
Dear's cabin was a half-mile up a curvy dirt road about 15 miles west of Asheville. A cross made of twigs was nailed to the wall of the pale yellow shack on Saturday.
Also, I can't help but feel some type of way about the lack of information about this asshole. It's almost like the media is actually walking on eggshells for once before saying anything about this guy. Any other shooter, they'd be combing through his social media accounts, prior records, talking to family members and friends, etc. They would be calling him a thug, terrorist, etc. already. A white guy shooting up the area around a women's health clinic makes us shrug our shoulders about the shooter and why he did what he did.
I know it's possible this guy could be quasi-off the grid, but I'm side-eyeing the coverage for now.
I understand your point, but I'm okay with not making the story all about him. I read an article earlier that identified the shooter, but the lede identified and talked about the officer who was killed.
I'd say the less publicity the better, but given that he was taken alive and will be tried, I'm sure we'll find out every detail possible eventually. :/

This is exactly what is (or rather isn't) happening on my feed, and I have a lot of LE-oriented friends. It's infuriating.

Oh wow, this is where my grandparents live (it's a town that's part tourist/part crunchy hippie liberal/part hillbilly).

106.5 Black Mountain was the Christian radio station that broadcast I grew listening to James Dobson's Focus on the Family programming which is based in Colorado Springs.
Coincidence???
Wait...was it 106.9?? 106.5 was The End...the Charlotte's sweet alternative station that provided the soundtrack to my Great Rebellion?!?
Sorry, off topic. The guy sounds like a crazy recluse who shouldn't have a gun.
The day after a gunman killed three people and shot nine others at a Colorado Planned Parenthood office, officials tell NBC News a motive remains unclear, but say the suspect talked about politics and abortion.
Robert Lewis Dear, a North Carolina native who was living in a trailer in Colorado, made statements to police Friday at the scene of the Colorado Springs clinic and in interviews that law enforcement sources described as rantings.
In one statement, made after the suspect was taken in for questioning, Dear said "no more baby parts" in reference to Planned Parenthood, according to two law enforcement sources with knowledge of the case.

He also mentioned President Barack Obama in statements.

Dear is being held on no bond, and isn't expected to appear in court until Monday, according to jail booking records.
Law enforcement officials are looking into the background of the suspect. Police are interviewing people who knew Dear, including his girlfriend in Colorado. They are also examining his computer and any social media footprint.
Sources said there would have been nothing apparent in Dear's background — including a felony conviction or previous mental health issue — that would have disqualified him from buying an AK-47 style, high-powered rifle used in the shootings.

But a look at Dear's criminal past shows a history of other arrests, including ones for domestic violence against his then-wife in 1997, and being a "Peeping Tom" in 2002 after a neighbor in South Carolina reported him watching her, according to documents obtained by NBC News.
Friday morning's shooting at the Colorado Springs clinic resulted in a five-hour standoff between the suspect and police. One of the three killed was a police officer, Garrett Swasey, 44; the other two, described as civilians, will be identified pending autopsies, officials said.
Just checking if any Republican leadership has condemned the attacks.
In terms of non presidential candidate governors or senators, I haven't heard a thing. In terms of presidential candidates, only 2 out of 14 have mentioned the attack at all. Ted Cruz offered his thoughts and prayers to all of the victims, and my favorite Republican John Kasich said that there was no need for the unspeakable violence that brought forth this tragedy.
