I read some of the transcripts the other day and wanted to teleport myself back to the 80s so I could forcibly kick Reagan, Speakes, and the rest of the administration involved in the shins.
It's infuriating. How many people could we have saved? How much further would we be along if they didn't make a joke out of it?
Ah, the greatness that is Amurricah. Gay men and Africans. The HIV virus could give lessons on choosing the right host. And we wouldn't do much better if a similar virus decided to make an appearance today, sadly.
I think that the Reagan administration was the worst in recent history regarding damaging policies and long lasting repercussions. This is one more example of that.
This one is particularly fascinating because it documents the earliest activists and how the Reagan administration ignored AIDS. It also goes through who of the activists are still alive and were lucky enough to live until the better treatments were available. It's just so well done.
I am older and remember so many people dying. My English teacher, one of my best friend's brothers, friend of the family, etc. and that the government did NOTHING for YEARS. It was unreal.

Thanks for this! I was born in the early 1980s. It's strange to me to think that all of this was happening as I was growing up and I'm only just now learning about it.

I think a lot of people don't really get what happened if they weren't in high risk circles. I was born in the early 80s and only "got" it because I lost a cousin to the virus and my mom worked in a radiology office that treated a high number of AIDS patients. Otherwise I think it was easy to be oblivious to its real impact.

It's shit like this that makes my mother turn her head and spit any time someone mentions Reagan in her presence. Still. He was not some cuddly old man wanting to like, snuggle America into a stronger economy. He - and many members of his administration - was a calculating, heartless asshole.
