One of my facebook friends just posted a picture of meal preparation - only the "meat" isn't meat, it's her placenta. It's captioned "thank you (H) for helping me to eat my placenta."
NO, not FB-appropriate! I don't even have anything against ingesting your own placenta, but this falls under the category of "things you don't need to announce over social media."
It's chopped up in a bowl with what appears to be kale - she clarified in the comments that she's making a smoothie. Somehow I don't think any amount of shakeology will mask that flavor!
I don't even think I got to see my placenta, I was too doe-eyed with my baby.
I was thinking of having mine encapsulated, but DH was sufficiently grossed out... and there's no real scientific research of it's benefits yet, so I didn't ask. I wonder if PPD would have been better. Although, I doubt it. I was depressed before DS came, his birth was just the catalyst for my realizing that I needed help.
Has anyone on this board actually eaten/drank/encapsulated their placenta? No judgement, I'm curious and have thought about encapsulating mine this time.

I wonder about the PPD... Maybe it'll be a placebo effect? Lol
That's what I want to know. But without scientific studies, I am a little afraid to try it. I mean, is it canabalism or a normal part of natural life? I don't know.

I had my second and third placentas encapsulated.
Did you notice a difference between your health after your first and second kids?

I encapsulated mine. I had a pretty easy PP recovery and was able to successfully breastfeed, but since I've only had one baby I can't say if it actually made a difference.
I got mine encapsulated for 2 & 3. Luckily my SIL is a doula that does encapsulations, so it was almost free.
Whether it has a legit effect or just placebo, I don't care. My recoveries were SO much better. Quicker, easier, felt like "me" sooner. Better milk supply - I have IGT so I was willing to do anything. There were a few other differences in the labors that probably contributed, besides being more prepared since it wasn't my first time. (I was induced with the first, cervadil only. Had a 2nd degree tear, then 2 stitches, then nothing, even though each baby was a pound+ bigger. I also left the hospital/birth center faster with 2 & 3.)
Anyway, I think it helped & id do it again - but eating it un-encapsulated is a no for me.
I saw my placenta with X and thought it was really cool. My OB brought the pan it was in over to us and showed us. Fun fact: his placenta delivered with such force that blood sprayed on my doctor and the wall and curtain behind her. Housekeeping was called to clean up.
K's delivery was such a whirlwind that they had it in the biohazard bag before I thought to ask to see it.

I had PPD/PPA with my first and not with the others. But I evacuated from my home when he was born, then we moved cross-country when he was 3 weeks old, had no friends or family, MH was gone from 10 weeks-14 weeks, then he was working 14 hours six days per week. With my second and third I had a much better support system and a less hectic post partum.
So I can't say for sure if it helped or the difference was all situational, but the $150 was worth it, even if it was just placebo. I would have paid any amount of money not to feel again like I did the first time.
