Not that often. Maybe 1-2 every 2 weeks. If I am with friends will have some wine or if we go for a nice meal. I am team rather eat my calories but do enjoy a nice glass of wine when with my girlfriends.
Is our culture really so Madonna/whore toward alcohol use that someone will claim to never drink (oh, except when they want to get drunk)? Sorry, but that's silly. You drink if you get drunk.

Huh? That is a weird takeaway.
I don't think so. In my experience, it's not uncommon for people to believe drinking=drunk. A person who drinks is doing so to get drunk. It especially shows in our cultural approach to alcohol consumption in pregnancy. What I can't say I've heard before is someone claiming to never drink, except those times when they're getting drunk.

Before my son, a lot. H and I would split a bottle (+) of wine a few times a week, or have 2-3 beers (or more) a night. Since Ben was born, a beer/glass of wine at dinner a couple of times per week, and then another beer or some more wine after he goes to bed if it's the weekend. Mostly because he keeps me so busy when I get home from work, (my husband has been home alone with him all day, so he basically tosses him at me when I walk in the door), I can barely drink water. And since my alarm goes off at 5:20 (*sob*), by the time he goes to bed around 8:30 and I finally get to sit down, I am spent for the day.

But unless I am missing somethingonly one or two people have said this. Most have said they have a drink daily, a few times a week, or infrequently. And I assume the "I only drink when I want to get drunk" people are people who don't enjoy the taste of alcohol or the ritual of a glass of wine or a cocktail, but still like the experience of being drunk on rare occasions. I don't feel that way (quite the opposite--I love a drink or two but don't really enjoy being truly drunk anymore), but it is not hard for me to understand that others might. It just seems like a matter of personal preference to me. I don't get how it is indicative of a Madonna/Whore dichotomy.
@this YES, not drinking is one of the top 5 worst things about being pregnant. Maybe too 3, behind the nausea and the weight gain. Fuuuuuuuuucccccckkkkkkkk I miss booze!
I think it might be the #1 worst thing. I mean, I had bad food aversions which certainly sucked more than the not drinking, but that only lasted 5 weeks.
When we decided to go for #2, I think I upped my drinking to compensate. I even delayed testing until after the weekend. A nightly mug of herbal tea is just NOT the same.

"I don't drink at all. I'm not opposed to it, but I've never found anything I actually enjoy. I do drink when I want to get drunk" That's what I'm talking about. Maybe my analogy wasn't great, but I'm getting at this dysfunctional relationship Americans in general have with alcohol. It's ok to drink rarely/occasionally.
I can't really have more than 2 drinks anymore, since E was born, because I feel like ass the next day. Even 2 pours at some restaurants/bars are too much. I love drinking, but it's a delicate balance. lol
This is me, exactly. I LOVE drinking and being slightly tipsy. But any more than 1-2 drinks and I get a hangover.
So I only drink 1-2x a week. 1-2 drinks max.
Except the last week. We were in Jamaica so I said fuck it and had like 10 drinks a day.

That is odd wording. I agree that it is inaccurate to say that you "don't drink at all," then follow it up by saying that you drink when you want to get drunk. But wording aside, I just assume anyone who only drinks to get drunk does so because they don't enjoy regular or occasional social drinking, not because they think it is wrong to drink regularly. Everyone likes what they they like.
A good number of people in this thread have reported that they drink regularly or occasionally, and most of those peoole seem to be drinking 1-2 drinks a sitting when they do drink. That actually seems like a pretty functional relationship with alcohol to me.
Team jenny1980 . Average 1-2 daily. And I've never understood the shame in drinking before the kids' bedtime...
Drinking makes me really sleepy, and M tries to steal my glass/knock it out of my hand. So it's more enjoyable to do after he's in bed. No judgment from me. I do drink when we're out to dinner with him.
I have a glass of wine or a beer probably 3-4x/week. It's been a long time since I've drank enough to get drunk though - dealing with kids while hungover is just not worth it.

Ah, my comment was not in response to this thread. I've seen many times here comments about breaking out the wine before kids are in bed.
It varies for me depending on the time of year. I'm more likely to have a beer or glass of wine on a weeknight in the summer than any other time of year.
If I was going to average it I'd probably say 2-4 drinks per week (when not pregnant). I go through phases. The months leading up to TTC both C and unborn child were probably my heavier drinking times as far as frequency and amount. But I really haven't missed it during either pregnancy.
I'm also pretty careful about monitoring myself. I have lots of alcoholism in my family (and in H's) and it scares me.
Since I had the baby, I've been all about the freedom.
I would say that I would have 2 decent glasses of wine 2-3 times a week since September. We had a lot of wine in the house that I had been collecting. Now we're starting to run low on it. So, I've been drinking a lot.

I'm dealing with an all day long hangover today, ugh.
I only drink on Fridays and Saturdays. Usually a glass or two of wine. We did our annual night out with our neighbors last night, and we're all hurting today.
Typically, I'll have a cocktail 3 nights a week, usually one of those nights I'll have more than one. I like to drink but don't like to be drunk. I like the nice buzz after 1 drink.
Half joking because I haven't yet joined the other side, but recent ventures have shown me that it's large and well occupied and much less calorie costly than alcohol.
I should also add, I had an entire bottle (maybe more, I don't remember) to myself on Thanksgiving. When we saw my brother the next day his greeting was "how's the head?!" lol. Surprisingly I bounced back very quickly that time. The previous time I drank too much... it was not as good

Until you put it in brownies. And get the munchies. <)
I try to limit myself to Friday-Sunday because of the calories. I rarely get drunk and I only drink wine at home. We usually open a bottle on Friday and have a glass a night with dinner or after the kids are in bed until it is gone. If we are out with friends I will have a cocktail or two and may get a little tipsy but I only get "drunk" on vacation or a night away with my husband.
