Yesterday I went to visit a referring office with a huge box of cookies only to learn the doctor was in the hospital because she just had her baby. I had no clue and I want to send her something. I meet new-mom dentists all the time and it would be nice to send them something when they have babies. When I had DD, one of my colleagues sent us an Edible Fruits arrangement, but I don't always know the personal home addresses of the doctors so that won't work because I need to send these gifts to their offices. My husband got a silver engraved comb and brush from the law office he worked in at the time when DD was born, but we barely use it. I'm thinking something in the $30 - $40 range that could be like a "signature" gift from our office so I can just click "order" everytime I find out someone has had a kid. Something useful, not decorative stuff like a piggy bank. Ideas?

I had some silicone necklesses when my kids were babies. Below is the one I had, but there are many others now that look nice. Given that they are dentist, a chew toy that doubles as a neckless might be appropriate. It really saved me, especially BF, since I have long hair, and my kid would pull it, if I didn't give them something else to hold, but also in line at the grocery, or where ever you don't want to get something out for them to play with.
I vote for Angel Dear too but I usually give the "pair and a spare" lovey set. It's served me well to have multiple loveys for my kids.
C had a big and little giraffe one. He used the little one as a baby, then moved up to the big one as he got older.
He recently gifted the little giraffe to P and my heart exploded.
That is so sweet.
DD1 has two of the same lamb lovey but only likes one of them because she is a weirdo. She tried to give the one she doesn't like to DD2 recently but she wanted NOTHING to do with it. lol. No sweet sister moments for me.
Thanks to spk926, my signature gift is now the personalized teething rattle from www.bannortoys.com that comes in your state's shape. It's been perfect for friends who have moved and you can personalize the bead colors. I was really pleased with the quality of the ones I ordered.

If you know the baby's name and birthdate, I think personalized gifts are really nice. You can get silver engraved picture frames in the $40 range. Or the PBK blanket SJ mentioned.

My go to gift is always a toiletry basket, especially if they have other kids. For $40, you could do a nicer premade basket from burts bees, honest co or mustela.

If you know her name I would search for a registry for her and see if she has a theme stall and try and find something to go along with that. I loved our little giraffe blanket and Sophie a friend gave us

My personal "signature gift" is Sophie. I buy one for every friend who has announced her pregnancy, it's sorta of my little tradition. They are only $25, though. But everyone has loved them.
ETA: We are also huge fans of the Little Giraffe blankies. Those run more like $40.
Thanks for the ideas. It's easy enough to find out the mothers' names, I'd just have to ask the office or look at their websites. But it would be tough to find out the names of the babies and that's more effort than I want to make. A lot of colleagues seem to hide their personal lives online.

I really like the idea of a tooth themed basket because it would be so memorable. The banana brush and a book and a piece of chewelry like pps mentioned, plus some other teethers. Chewy Ps and Qs are awesome for teething.
Get the A&A bath towel. It's about $20 for one, which is like triple the cost of other baby bath towels but it is infinitely nicer to use a real thick cotton towel rather than those awful thin polyester ones.
