MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A woman has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to abort her own fetus.
According to reports, 31-year-old Anna Marie Yocca allegedly filled a bathtub with a few inches of water then used a coat hanger to attempt the abortion.
That’s when officials said the amount of blood alarmed her, and her boyfriend took her to the emergency room at St. Thomas Rutherford hospital.
From there, Yocca was transferred to St. Thomas Midtown in Nashville where doctors were able to save the baby who weighed 1.5 pounds at birth.
According to nurses and doctors, Yocca made disturbing statements about the baby and wanting to end the pregnancy. She allegedly attempted the abortion at 24 weeks into the pregnancy.
The baby was saved, but officials said the baby will require medical attention. Authorities confirmed the baby had damage to the lungs, eyes, and heart due to Yocca’s actions and the coat hanger.
The investigation began in September, and in December, a grand jury indicted Yocca on a charge of attempted first degree murder.
Her bond was set at $200,000, and she has been scheduled to appear in court December 21.

Good Lord. Abortion rates are highest where abortion is illegal, in part because those countries also restrict access to safe, effective contraception (ahem, the Hobby Lobby case, ahem). Is that where we're headed?
When I was in college, I had a shirt with a bloody coat hanger that read "We will not go back!" I actually think I still have it. I wore it with pride that we had "won" that battle. I weep.
ETA since my girlfriend got pregnant (5 months in now) I found I had to think about abortion and my stance on it a lot. While I remain firmly pro choice, I have seen the fetus develop and turn into what is indisputably a baby. So I almost think there should be some new terminology for the later stages of the baby's development. But right now, there isn't, and the definition of it as a fetus is important because a) words matter and b) calling it a baby when it technically is a fetus is a slippery slope which leads to pro lifers calling it a baby as soon as it is conceived. I wanted to explain myself so you didn't feel like I was being an ass for no reason.

I also am extremely, extremely leery of first degree murder charges because of the resounding personhood implications of such a charge. That is a legal precedent that I am entirely uncomfortable with.
TN has counseling laws and a 48 hour waiting period. Is it possible that these factors had a part in leading to such a gruesome outcome?
I think someone willing to inflict this level of self-injury needs a psych consult, not a rap sheet.
YES!!!!!!!!
I just wrote a version of this in response to gpointe's Fb post. I will re paste it here because why not.
There's a point that's being lost here. She didn't just try to end the pregnancy. She caused serious physical harm to HERSELF. She could have died. People with options and choices don't do that. I don't need to know more to decide whether I should judge her, the mere fact that she was willing to plunge sharp objects deep inside her body tells me that she was in a unique situation and her particular medical needs (both psychological and physical) were severely unmet for whatever reason. Isn't that why anyone else would cause physical and irreparable harm to their bodies? Regardless of your position on abortion at 24 weeks, imprisoning a woman like this isn't going to do a damn thing to help anyone.
24 weeks is viability, isnt it? so I don't think anyone is wrong to feel weird about them calling it a "fetus." And I am as pro choice as can be.
I am not saying anyone is wrong for their feelings. This story is some distasteful, horrific shit. I'm saying the term is a medical and legal one, and all our horror doesn't change the word's meaning.
Eta: yes, it's a point of viability. But even full term, still-gestating fetuses are still described as such.
There is a side of me that asks "does she need to have a reason?" That is just for the abortion, though. I can see why there would be a question as to why she felt she needed to do it this way.

I think I know what you are getting at.
There is very clearly this idea that there's all these women running around just enjoying pregnancy and just waking up in the second trimester all, "my jeans don't fit, meh, this isn't fun anymore, lemme just stop at the abortoplex and then I'll meet you at Starbucks, mmkay?"
THAT DOESNT FUCKING HAPPEN.
The "why" here is not "why did it take her so long to decide" but rather, "what in her life made her suddenly decide death was a better option than continuing a pregnancy?" That's the real why. The only reason people ask the first question is to decide how much judgment to levy. The second why though, that's a great question to ask because it can lead to solutions to those problems, real things that can be done to prevent other women from doing that.
