Is it safer for them to have shoes on prior to walking or not? My 9 month old can pull up things and stand for a few seconds with no hands. I assume bare feet or with socks helps her balance so I'm not sure if shoes are helpful or not helpful.
C started wearing shoes when he was about 9 months old, because it was too cold to be barefoot and he kept pulling his socks off. We used Robeez. He didn't start walking until he was 19 months old (gross motor delays) and was wearing shoes for a LONG time before he started walking. But in children without delays, it seems the recommendation is for them to learn to walk barefoot, if possible. I kind of feel like once your kid is pulling up/cruising, it's better to have them in shoes when you're out in public so you can set them down on the ground if you want (or if they want) to stand up for a while. C wasn't doing that by 12 months, but I felt like at 12 months he was old enough/big enough that people looked at us weird when he wasn't wearing shoes in public.
DD was walking around 10.5 months which just so happened to be when it was getting cold in MN since it was October. So she started wearing Robeez then. I didn't get her real shoes until maybe that spring? We went and got her fitted at Stride Rite and she got those really flexible ones. So that was around maybe 15ish months?

She's 7 months and pulling up to standing then sidestepping, so I bought her Robeez a couple of weeks ago and she wears those to daycare. She couldn't get a good grip on certain flooring in socks and since that doesn't stop her from trying I don't want her to smash her face. Before that I just had her in socks when it got cooler out. I think she'll walk in a couple of months so I'll get her some real shoes pretty soon.
We started occasionally around 9 months, only because her doctor suggested it because she was a toe-stander and her pedi thought shoes might help. And it did. She didn't wear them regularly until she started walking though.
Our daycare requires them for the toddler room, which she moved to at 12 months. She wears either robeez or bobux.
I plan to get the soft motion stride rite shoes for next spring (18ish months) because that is when she will start using the playground outside instead of their daily buggy walks.
About 11 months, when he started going to daycare and really toddling around. We use soft soled Stride Rite (from Target version) or Targets version of Robeez.

He started wearing fleece booties with a non-slip sole when it got cold so maybe October (6ish months) but only when we were out. Barefoot at home. We got him a pair of Stride Rites just before he started walking (maybe 10-11 months). He hated them at first and refused to walk with them on even though he walked well barefoot. He was wearing them regularly when out and about at 12-13 months but still barefoot at home.
He had some super soft soled moc type shoes that he started wearing around 11 months. They were the MiniStars brand from Target. He didn't have any trouble keeping socks on, but 'no shoes?' Comments were bothering me. He wore those until 2 weeks after he started walking(so 15 months) because then daycare wanted him in regular shoes. I got the super flexible sole ones from StrideRite.
There just isn't a need for true shoes until they are walking. And even then, it's better for their feet to walk without shoes.

We got her shoes once she was walking well, at about 10 months. I was in no hurry, as I figured she wouldn't want to wear them, but daycare wanted her to have them. Boy was I ever wrong. She is pretty much obsessed with shoes. How such a girly girl came out of me, I will never know.
I got tired of the comments about 4 months. I put shoes on her when we are out. I've never heard of Robert so I'm going to look for those. She's been pulling up fora couple months and recently srted cruising. I need something better than the shoes I have.
At around 13mos, because that's when she started daycare and they insisted on it. Otherwise I would've left her barefoot or in socks until she started really walking, which was at 15mos.
