Overheard at a kids birthday party by the Dad. Talking to his own mother. 'Pizza guy said 'no tip?' And I said 'funny. I don't tip when people ask me'.' Followed by snarky laugh. I was shocked and immediately ran to tell my H. Lol.
It bothered me even more after we went to their house later. Gorgeous new house. 3000sq feet. 7 baths. 4 bedrooms. Driveway fit 11 cars. There was no reason not to tip other than being a jerk
Then I got to thinking that maybe he wasn't a cheap bastard. And maybe this is the norm for people.
So what do you guys think? No tip if the person asks? I have no idea how it went down. Perhaps the driver was rude, but I just don't think so.
I think I would have to be there to hear his tone. Tipping the pizza delivery guy is one of the most universal people you tip though. However, if someone said to me "no tip?" I'd be really glad I didn't tip them.
Definitely need to see the situation but to me, asking for a tip already means the person didn't tip you. Unless he paid cc and was planning to tip in cash. Who does that to a delivery driver?
Eh, I have had pizza delivery guys be way late, then super-rude about it, and we didn't tip them. I don't mind late if they say something like "Sorry for the delay, game traffic was way worse than I expected." But when they are 20-30 min late, don't say anything, and then act huffy when we ask about the delay, then I'm disinclined to tip.
Maybe something happened that you don't know about that caused the dad not to tip? I agree it would take a lot, especially on a presumably large order for a party, but I would try not to judge without all the info.

If I didn't tip the pizza delivery guy, it'd be the last time I ordered from that place. Future pizzas are sure to be wrong, contaminated, or cold.
For real though, in general non-tippers are jerks. Especially of the, "If you dare to ask me then I definitely will not tip you!" We are talking about low wage earners here, who probably have enough struggle as it is.
I cant imagine not tipping a pizza/food delivery person. Even if they are late I assume it's traffic or orders are backed up at the restaurant or something and I don't penalize the driver. I don't really see how a pizza being 20 mins late or something is all at the fault of a delivery driver. I mean, what would they be doing to cause the delay, driving in circles?
I would also think that if the driver said, no tip?, it meant he already hadn't been tipped. Like he was provided payment and it didn't include a tip whether it was a credit card slip, or cash that didn't cover a tip etc.
We usually pay cc and tip cash bc we are always worried if they actually see the money on the cc and I think they get taxed on cc tips. We always tip though. Never had anyone say no tip. I am usually handing over the cash when they hand me the cc receipt to sign.
For the person to ask, that means the pizza was paid for w/ no extra money. So... the guy telling the story was being a jerk and it comes across as a really petty, stupid power play. "I sure showed that delivery guy!!" over, what, $2??
And seriously- from places we get delivery from on a somewhat regular basis- I always try to be a little generous. I recognize these people now. I know they recognize me!

Something tells me the pizza order came to like $37.42 and the guy gave the driver two twenties and then stood their with his hand out and THAT'S why the driver asked.
The father was a major asshole. The driver wouldn't have asked unless the guy already stiffed him, so it's BS that he wasn't tipping b/c the guy asked. What an entitled douchebag.
Someone like that is a major asshole. Not only to not tip a delivery guy (bad enough) but then to brag about it after like that? Tells me everything about him I need to know.

I remember I had a big order to deliver in the middle of summer on a really hot day. I had to make multiple trips up a lot of stairs and no one helped and they barely gave me a tip. It was to a corporate office so you know it' was a business expense anyways. Such assholes. This guy sounds like a tight wad.
