With the exception of the 4 month wakeful, the best technique for a wake up at that age was to feed quickly and then get them back to bed. Ferber mentions this in his chapter on night weaning as well--that dropping this feed might just mean an earlier wake up time.

Mine born the same week as yours is entering the 4 month wakeful. Up every couple hours last night. On wakeup 3 at 5ish, I gave her the paci and rocked her back to sleep but she had just eaten at 3:30 so...
I have no clue because Ethan drank three bottles after bedtime last night. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
!! How much does he eat during the day?!
He was just crazy hungry yesterday I think. Probably 9 bottles total so 36 ounces in a 24 hour period. He was sleeping SO good since we moved him to his own room so I'm hoping last night was a weird anomaly.

This is my method. E likes to wake up between 4 and 5, and sometimes stays awake. I feed him and try to get him back to bed. Most of the time it works, sometimes it doesn't.
is that his only waking? does he go back to sleep after?
He'll fuss MOTN about 1-2am for a few minutes and I do paci adjustments, usually 5-20min of this when I'm not really awake. He goes back to sleep fine after
I'd see if he wants to eat then and maybe you'll get some more sleep.
But my kid was almost always hungry when he woke up (still the case) so feeding was the path of least resistance.
When P gets up that early (a few times a month, and definitely around that age), I'd feed her and put her back in bed. Keep the room dark, no talking. Feed and back in bed.
We went through that with DD from 2.5-4 months. I just fed her right away, no diaper change yet, and she would go to sleep again until 7-7:30.
Then she ditched it and just woke up 12-1 and at 7. And now after doing that for about a month she's waking up at 3am too. Still better than 5 I think.

I'd rather feed and get another few hours of sleep than CIO. I find it I feed at the 4 am wakeup shell sleep till 6-7:30 I never turn the lights on, never say a word, act like it's the MON and shove a bottle in his mouth, LOL l also think at that age, he probably is legit hungry and needs it, so you're not creating habits

I don't really have any advice. But I'm right there with you my friend since DD is only a day younger than N.
But we are also still usually feeding once a night sometime between 2-4am. It's always such a crap shoot as to how well she'll sleep after her MOTN feeding. Sometimes she'll go right back to sleep stay down until 6-6:30am and other mornings she'll wake up during the 5am hour and need a paci replacement. If she doesn't want to stay asleep in her crib with the paci during the 5am hour then I just pick her up do a bit of rocking with the paci and she'll stay asleep for another 45 mins or so, but only if I hold her/bedshare. So I usually just crash in the twin bed in the nursery with her next to me and doze in/out until about 6:30am when we are up for the day and I feed her and start getting myself and the older kids ready for the day.
We are planning on sleep training around NYE when I'll have the 30th-Jan 4th off work. So I'll be right there with you.
Overall, I feel like she's doing pretty well for a 3 month old and I'm just hanging in there and knowing there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

((hugs)) That age was the worst for me. We ST'd at 4 months and were able to get by with feeding at bedtime and dream feed at 10:30. He then slept (after a few days of CIO wakeups) til 6 or later. Maybe try feeding for now and then CIO when he turns 4 months (or when you are comfortable, whenever that is). Hope he starts sleeping later soon.
My son is about the same age. Wakes up almost every day between 4-5. I feed him quickly and put him back down, he falls right back to sleep until 7/8. I think it's pretty common at this age.
DS2 woke twice a night most nights, including early mornings around the same time until 11 months. We tried to let him CIO, but he would not let up. He seemed legit hungry. I found it was easier to just feed him and hope to get back to sleep.
He just now at 11 months gave it up and is starting to STTN. He is eating a LOT more solids now during the day and seems to have made a big difference.

Dammit. Maybe I just need to feed him at the start of his early morning fussing then?
I'll be honest, we were planning on just having him CIO beginning after Christmas. But I wasn't sure if CIO works for early morning wakeups
Yes, this. Sparkybaby will wake up stupid early in the morning too. 9 days out of 10 if I just take the ten minutes to feed her and put her back down I will get at least two more hours of sleep. Sometimes three. I kind of think of it as they have gone a long time without food at that point.
... Is there any way to outsource some of the morning? Like could you find some nannyshare who can work 7:30-10:30, help DS1 get ready daycare, then run errands after everyone is out of the house?
I know this sounds weird but people post asking for nanny share with totally wackadoo hours on my neighborhood listserv. "We're looking for someone to help from 8am-11am Monday & Tuesday, and 3p-6:30p Wednesday and Friday", stuff like that

I would definitely just go in and feed and hope he goes back to sleep quickly. Our little one was born in June, but her adjusted age makes her only a week or so older than Nathan. We just are starting to see her sleep through the night every night, and it only started happening consistently when we introduced solids. Before then, she was waking up because she was HUNGRY.
Jack woke up at that time for about two months straight (3.5-5.5 months). Around six months, he started sleeping until 6. Around 7.5 months, it moved to 6:30-6:45.
I could tell if he was still sleepy enough that a paci would work or if he was fully awake. If awake, the best thing to do was feed him immediately and lay him down again right after so I could at least lay in bed and relax for 20 more minutes, even if I didn't sleep.
My LO is 2 mo old and I have the same issue. For those who say just get up and feed and put them back to bed - if they are swaddled, do you leave that on? Currently I take her out of it and I feel like that is waking her more than necessary but I feel bad leaving her in the swaddle to eat.
