I'm in a weird mood.
Anyway, I need ideas or a recommendation for a Christmas gift. I have my brother. He doesn't have much on his actual wish list. But I was looking thru Q&A from previous years and he posted this:
"I would love to get a simple guide on how to be a really good cook. I've got a lot of cook books, but I'm not sure they teach you as much as just give recipes."
So I was thinking: a gift certificate for cooking lessons at an awesome local restaurant, a bottle of wine (because natch), and then I was looking for maybe a basic "how to" cookbook.
But I don't know what the cookbook would be. Or if that's a good idea in general. Any ideas?

We stopped by the dealership to investigate our options for the end of my lease last night. Picking up the new lease this afternoon already. I'm just glad my budget is finalized either way.

I was a medical emergency on my return flight last night. My blood sugar dropped and...it was not good. So freaking embarrassing. Thankfully they listened to me when I said all I needed was a Coke, no paramedics to meet me at the gate.

I work for a division of a HUGE company. They announced layoffs for this week, which I won't be affected by, but then last week they announced a merger with another huge company. I have no idea how it will affect my life or how soon, but I imagine that I'll need to find a new job in the next 18 months or so.
I'm the only one in my office today but I didn't go it because we have 8 inches of snow, it's windy and one of my neighbors posted that the main road I take to work had a closure at the main exit so I called and woke up my boss (whose on vacation in Vegas) and told him I'm not going to work. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't windy.
But then my H decided that he wants me to make all the phone calls that he needs to make "since your home." He's such a baby. I called his Dr's office (they are closed) and he wants me to call electricians and see if they can come over today since I'm already home. Are you kidding? No one is coming over today. Boys are so annoying sometimes.
Also, DH and I have planned a lovely New Years grownup night including an overnight hotel stay. Unfortunately the 10lbs I put on this year means the formal dress I got in March for a wedding no longer fits, and I am scrambling to figure out something else. It's fun, but stressful.

Oh...I think I heard about this on the news. The big dogs in your area, right? They're merging and then dividing again into three market area subdivisions? I was actually thinking that it sounded like a nightmare for the employees. That's a lot of uncertainty. fingers crossed for you!

That's us! We aren't technically part of the 3 new subdivisions. We handle the pension and some outside assets so we have no idea what's going to happen.
I assume we'll have a decent amount of notice once a decision is made. This is probably flameful, but I haven't discussed any of this with DH yet. I just don't see the need to add to his pile of worries when there isn't anything tangible to worry about yet. Even more flameful, since he doesn't really follow the news, he probably doesn't even know what's going on or thought to ask me about it.

have you checked Rent the Runway? I'm sure it's their busy season, but it's work a look.

My actual random is that my schedule today kind of sucks. I have a bunch of conference calls and meetings, but each one ends about 15 min before the next one starts. So I don't have any time to do anything other than respond to emails and do my meetings.
Plus, I'm interviewing for a promotion today. I interviewed for a different promotion yesterday. I have no idea what I'll do if I'm lucky enough to get offered both.

This is @ related but heartwarming so I am putting it here.
I was walking through the hospital earlier and saw a little girl getting her picture taken while holding a sign. It said "Last day of chemotherapy. I beat cancer." She had the biggest grin on her face. It totally made me tear up. (heart)

It does have basic recipes for lots of things but it has so much more--I try to give a copy to nieces/nephews when they move out on their own.
The Introduction: "This is not a cookbook, it's a cooking book--for beginning cooks and experienced cooks, for curious cooks and hurried cooks. It tells you the size of a medium onion and what to substitute when you run out of baking chocolate."
It has all types of hints and tips like "Pouring tips: To pour powder from a jar, use a rotating motion. Slant the jar until the contents almost fall out. Then rotate from right to left. Powder will pour in a controlled steam." and "Rescue: I Overbeat The Egg Whites! If you overbeat egg whites, beat in 1 unbeaten white for every 3 or 4 overbeaten ones."
I use this book often and it seems to always have the answer I"m looking for.
I'm about to have a complete screaming freakout on the next person who looks at me funny.
I'm currently on hold with my doctor's office to reschedule an appointment because I'm 95% sure I'm going to get called for jury duty tomorrow. It's taking them 5 years to answer the damn phone and I'm still pissed at them for the last time I tried to go to the office for this same damn reason. And at the same time my main client is driving me completely fucking batshit. She keeps sending me angry emails but not actually reading my replies. She's convinced that I've missed a deadline, not matter how many times I tell her that actually I did what she asked me to do and it's been sent to the person she told me to send it to. the problem is that it didn't come directly from me, because I don't actually HAVE the software required to put it together, which I told her back when the decision was made to use this software. So another team member formatted my material in the software and included it with their submission. Which I've told her. Three times now. But because she doesn't have an email specifically FROM me she's convinced that my stuff isn't in the package.
Yeah, according to the googles the nearest Qdoba is in Fullerton, which would require a 30+ minute drive on the freeway. Thankfully there are plenty of other taco joints in SoCal. I'm just bitter because one of my favorite places closed their nearest to us location. The rent is just too damn high in my city.

America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook I'd a good one, as are any of the ones published by them, so Cooking Light and Cooks Illlustrated. Not sure of the place you're getting the cooking lessons gift certificate, but I'd get him a fun class, if they have one.
