C (20 mo) just aged up into the next room at daycare. They will eventually help potty train him. For now they just let him sit on the potty once or twice a day to get him used to sitting on it. There is zero pressure for him to do anything, it's more just to get him feeling comfortable around a potty. They have an actual child-sized commode there. They say that he really likes sitting on the potty.
I've been thinking about getting a potty or ring or something for home, again, just to let him sit on for a few minutes a day, zero pressure. But we are probably at least several months away from initiating any kind of potty training (I'm thinking 6 months +, depending on day care recommendation).
Is this a good idea? Will it reinforce what he's doing at day care? If so, what kind of potty do I want?
We had one, I think the Ikea one. DD hated it. She much preferred the ring over the actual toilet. It was nice to ask her occasionally if she wanted to try it, with no pressure.
We have a little potty and the ring. At first, DD really enjoyed the potty and was a little nervous on the ring at first. She has been using the potty fairly regularly for weeks now (we're going to potty train her after Christmas though because everything will be chaotic and we are traveling before then). We did not have a poop in a diaper this previous weekend because she was so on top of using the potty! She has recently started to prefer the ring, which is great because cleaning that little potty is gross!
oh yeah, I also read the Oh Crap! book right after we bought the potty... We thought about taking it away (as the book suggests), but DD really likes using it, so we haven't. I'll let you know how potty training goes after Christmas
We have had a little Ikea potty for a while. DD likes to sit her stuffed animals on it and say they are going potty. Recently she has started voluntarily sitting on it herself (before and after bath, so diaper less) and saying that she is going pee pee in the potty, although she never actually has.
I don't have any intention of pushing PT until at least next spring either, but our DC has the same approach as yours and she seems into it for now so I'm just rolling with it.

We bought one when DD was 18 months because she seemed to be showing interest, but once we bought one she hasn't cared at all (she's 26 months now). She refuses to sit on it if she mentions she has to pee or poop and we ask if she wants to sit on it. I don't think it will hurt, but even the idea of just introducing the potty to her and getting her comfortable around it was a fail for us. She shows no signs of interest in potty training anymore (which is fine, we're in no rush).
It's just taking up space in the bathroom now so I guess we'll take it away temporarily as per the suggestions above.
