Interfaith voice's is a great resource for learning about all religions. BBC also has "Beyond Belief" which taught me about the Sunni vs Shia conflict.

There's a 3 volume series called The Venture of Islam by Marshall G. S. Hodgson, which is THE definitive set if you're looking to read about Islamic history. I find it to be kind of dry, though.
If you're interested in women and gender roles in Islam, I cannot recommend Leila Ahmed or Fatima Mernissi enough.
