I usually tip 15%. I also have to admit that I forget people like hotel housekeepers, but I don't like them to come into my room when I'm there so I guess they only come in before I get there and after I leave. Maybe that's not as horrible. IDK.
Haircut: Never got one at a salon, but I tipped 20% for when my sister and I got our hair done for my wedding. Waxing: Never got a wax Nails: Only got it done once and it was a poor job lol - she cut my nails jagged. I think I tipped like 15%. Massage: Never got a massage Dinner: 15% for poor service, 18% for average, 20% for great Hotel staff: I leave $2 for each day of my stay. Cleaning staff: I don't have such, wish I did lol. Servicemen like painters: We did painting ourselves. Never tipped plumbers, roof repairmen, or the like. Babysitter: N/A to date, but I think that in this area (LCOL) something like $10-$12 is the going rate per hour. When I baby-sat in high school I received a $25 Christmas bonus, but that was like 13 years ago. Movers: $20 per mover is what we've done. Not sure if that's good or not. Others I'm forgetting:
Haircut: 20% Waxing: 20% Nails: 15-20% Massage: 20% Dinner: 15% Hotel staff: ? Cleaning staff: I've always hired people who work for themselves, so no tip necessary. Servicemen like painters: nothing Babysitter: nothing Movers: water and pizza and $10 per
My mother in law was telling me I over tip for everything. I assumed she was wrong, but I thought it would be interesting to see what people do. She is apparently a very bad tipper. Lol. I do the following,
Haircut: 20% Waxing: 20% Nails: 10-15% Massage: 20% Dinner: 18%-20% Hotel staff: Never have tipped them, but maybe I should. Cleaning staff: In my dreams I'll have to figure this out. Someday. Servicemen like painters: Only used family, so I made them food and gave them beer. Babysitter: $10 per hour rounded up to nearest hour, and I tip an extra hour if they cleaned up/did dishes/had to drive him anywhere. Movers: Didn't tip, which I now know is bad. Oops. I'd probably do 10% though.
katespade Here in the midwest, tipping movers is definitely expected. My parents weren't aware of this custom when they moved here, and the two guys waited around really annoyed until H and I noticed them and then tipped them each $20. I think $10 is sufficient most of the time, but they came on short notice.
I usually do 20% except for servicemen. Mechanics I usually do a flat rate of $5 for oil changes and $10-20 on how labor intensive the job was.
As for hotel staff, $2 for room service every time we have something delivered. $5-20 for room attendant depending on how long our stay and how clean it is.

I never considered tipping a mechanic. Do you just hand them cash when you pay?

I usually ask who worked on my car and hand it directly to the mechanic when my car is done.
