I think you're over thinking it. I think he means if something should arise at the last minute, you'll have his number to let him know so he's not wondering what happened.

This exactly. I wouldn't take it as an open invitation to start texting him or anything.

Yeah - overthinking. Anytime I make plans w/ someone and we don't have each others numbers, we always exchange them. Things happen and it's the easiest way to let him know if you're stuck in traffic, or.... who the heck knows.
I agree, overthinking MCC. Email him back and say something like, "Thanks. Here is my number as well, just in case xxx-xxx-xxxx."
This. And I vote for note texting/talking a lot before meeting. IMO it usually creates expectations that don't live up to the initial meeting. If you can keep the communication to a minimum it's more like an actual blind date, you know?

I totally agree with this. And I think this is where online dating goes terribly wrong. I think it should be used as a tool to meet people, not to get to know them.

This or if you get lost, stuck in traffic, whatever.

Another vote in the DL camp. I do this too when I am making dates. It isn't so we can text but rather if he is running late and needs to let me know. Or vice versa. I am more likely to check my texts/VM rather than my email prior to a date.
