Welcome to Whole30! I'll post a check in thread every Sunday this month and we'll do a recap thread on the 31st. This is open to anyone participating (even if you're modifying) and anyone interested in knowing more about Whole30. It sounds like most are starting today or tomorrow, so hopefully this timing works well for everyone.
Is this your first Whole30?
Are you doing any modifications to the program?
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances?
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up?
Tell us about your meal plan for the week.
Any tips or thoughts you want to share?
Stealing some advice from spellingbea - "don't over think it. It's protein and veg." You can make this month as complicated or uncomplicated as you like, but try not to stress out about eating this way. You can find a salad with protein anywhere!

I'm starting tomorrow.
Is this your first Whole30? This will be my 3rd. I did one last January and again in April-May.
Are you doing any modifications to the program? I'm allergic to tree nuts and sunflower, so I'm allowing peanuts and peanut butter for protein. I'm also not completely cutting alcohol, but will keep it gluten free.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances? Both. I know I have a dairy sensitivity, so this is a good way to just cut it out completely.
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up? Dessert- especially coming off the holidays
Tell us about your meal plan for the week. Mon- coconut oven "fried" chicken, roasted cabbage (fries for the kid) Tues- taco salad with ground turkey Wed- pork carnita bowls with grilled veggies Thurs- grilled steak with mushrooms, roasted red potatoes, broccoli Fri and Sat ??
Is this your first Whole30? No, I think this is the third time I've done it.
Are you doing any modifications to the program? Yes. I'll be allowing myself some dairy, mainly cheese in a couple of recipes here and there and milk if I have a latte.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances? I have found that doing Whole30 gives me a ton more energy, but I think it's from giving up processed foods and sugar, no real intolerances. This is all about eating healthier.
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up? Definitely sugar. I'm used to having something sweet at the end of the day.
Tell us about your meal plan for the week. I did some cooking last night and will finish it up today. I'm cooking everything this weekend so all my meals will be 'heat and eat'.
Egg Casserole (shredded sweet potato, sauteed peppers and onions, breakfast sausage, eggs) Cottage Pie (topping will include some white potatoes) Stuffed Pepper Soup (sans rice) Pizza Casserole (added bell peppers, mushrooms, spinach, and some cheese) Baked Chicken Thighs, Roasted Broccoli, Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Snacks: Fresh Veggies (Bell Peppers, Green Beans, Jicama, and Cucumber) with Avocado Ranch Dressing, Granny Smith Apples with Almond Butter

Is this your first Whole30? No, my first was last year at this time, and I've been following it loosely since.
Are you doing any modifications to the program? My nutritionist would prefer I add in a little dairy, and I also still drink protein shakes.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances? To eat healthier in my weight loss journey
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up? Alcohol
Tell us about your meal plan for the week. I usefully only prep a day or two ahead because I find if I do too many days I get bored or change my tastes and then waste food. It's pretty basic, protein like chicken or fish, and a veggie. Broccoli and green beans are my staples, along with sweet potatoes.
Any tips or thoughts you want to share? Don't beat yourself up if you slip up a bit. The first couple days are the hardest! It gets to be habit by the second week.

I didn't post in the other thread, but I definitely want to participate! I'm starting today.
- This is my second W30
- I'm not planning on any modifications except not being overly stressed about soy, canola, vegetable oils being used in the prep of restaurant meals (which I plan to minimize anyway).
- I'm doing W30 to kick start eating healthier and to quench my desire to eat sugar and other carbs all day every day
- I'll be badly missing bread in all of its various forms this week.
- I am traveling this week, so my plan is to survive without totally screwing up. I will be able to prep a bit of food for myself, which will help. I just polished off a super disappointing $9 'hummus plate' (beans, etc I know. I know) that consisted of a tiny portion of hummus, 1/8 each of red pepper and cucumber, and three olives (one with the surprise of 1/2 a pit). Stupid airport food.
I've done Whole 30 before, but only made it 20 days or so. Mainly I find it helpful in re-establishing my healthy ways after the gluttony of the holidays. Too many treats, too many drinks, finishing my DDs snacks, etc.
I don't plan to be concerned about low sugar condiments or broths. I will also use hard cheeses in salads. I may have a glass of wine with dinner if I find that to be my only reason to quit.
General meal plan this week: I Steak, Brussels Sprouts, Butternut Squash Caveman Strong Meatball Soup Spaghetti Meat Sauce over Broccoli Chicken and Kale Salad
Is this your first Whole30? This is my second. I've attempted it a few times before but only completed it once a couple years ago.
Are you doing any modifications to the program? Yes! I'm allowing myself wine and occasional dairy (just a little, l like adding cream to my soup and feta or goat cheese on my salad when we go out to eat). Oh, I also have paleo bread I found at Whole Foods. I've been eating it and it's really filling and only 60 calories a slice. I think it's healthy so I'm not cutting it out.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances? I need to lose some weight. I've posted about it before but I hurt my back in October and I haven't been able to weight train and that has TOTALLY thrown me off of my game. Plus with the holidays, my eating has gotten really bad. It just makes sense right now!
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up? Beans. I usually try to eat grain free so that's not too hard but I do add beans to a lot of dishes.
Tell us about your meal plan for the week. Here's my little idea dinner list. Dinner ideas:
bacon wrapped shrimp cauliflower fried rice Korean short ribs BBQ chicken coconut shrimp crab bisque paleo bread grilled cheese crockpot stew chicken tikka masala filet mignon Asian lettuce wraps Sausage, kale and sweet potato soup
Whole foods ribs (in the ready food area) Whole foods roasted veggies lemon roasted broccoli parmesan green beans mini carrots from Whole Foods
Cauliflower rice from TJ
Any tips or thoughts you want to share? Prep a lot and make your food yummy! I won't stick to anything that doesn't taste good!

This will be our third Whole 30. I will be keeping some dairy and some grains since I am pregnant and do not want to completely cut out right now. We will mainly be doing this to eat healthier and kick start a healthier lifestyle for the new year. Since I've been pregnant, we have fallen into a bad pattern. H also has persistent headaches and stomach issues, so hoping this will help. The hardest thing to give up will be fast food and donuts.
For this week we will have the following: Taco salad Spaghetti squash with marina and meatballs Chicken thighs and roasted brussel sprouts Salsa chicken over romaine and roasted veggies on the side Meatloaf and roasted potatoes
Lunches will be a combination of leftovers and salads.
Snacks will be salami, grapes and various nuts.
Breakfasts are smoothies, eggs and sausage or dinner leftovers.
It's very easy for us to maintain this diet after we get in a routine. The plus side is T will eat almost everything as well.
I am going to continue drinking milk, eating yogurt and some toast. I may also throw in some cereal every now and then.

Is this your first Whole30? Yep, first one!
Are you doing any modifications to the program? Nah, since it's the first time, I'm going to try to stick to the guidelines and see how it goes.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances? A little bit of all of it? Mainly, like I said in the other thread, I've reached a point where while the food is tasty while eating it, my stomach feels wrecked after so many meals. Something is up and I want to figure out what. It's been exponentially worse since I had my last child 6 months ago.
Hardest thing to give up? Hmm, nothing really, I mean, I dig beans a lot, but I'm fine to go without to see what happens. The main thing that will be hard, especially having little tiny people taking up a lot of my time is making intentional food choices in place of purely convenient ones.
Meal Plan for the Week: Monday: Egg+Avocado Scramble/Cobb Salad (Minus the Cheese) with Chicken/Pan Fried Chicken Thighs & Roasted Broccoli Tuesday: Sweet Potato Hash with Fried Egg/Leftovers/Ribeye with Sauteed Mushrooms and Onions, Roasted Root Veggies, Sauteed Spinach Wednesday: Scrambled Eggs & Peppers/Arugula Salad with Seared Ribeye and Roasted Red Peppers/Bacon+Apple Smothered Pork Chops , Garlic Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes Thursday: Sweet Potato Hash with Fried Egg/Garden Salad with Grilled Chicken/Grilled Chicken Breasts, Roasted Brussels Sprouts Friday: Egg+Avocado Scramble/Turkey, Assorted Nuts, Olives, Peppers, Fruit/Meatloaf, Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes, Steamed Broccoli Saturday: Egg+Spinach Frittata/Leftovers/Chicken Stir Fry Sunday: Bacon Wrapped Egg Cups/Leftovers/Taco Salad
Snacks I'll have assorted veggies, apples with almond butter, hardboiled eggs & nuts
Is this your first Whole30? Nope, this will be my third.
Are you doing any modifications to the program? Yes, keeping yogurt, some grains (oats), and sweetener in my coffee.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances? I want to be healthier.
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up? Sugar
Tell us about your meal plan for the week. I don't really meal plan. I keep it super simple (/boring? Lol). I'll probably get more creative as I get into it out of necessity.

Can any of you who this is not your first rodeo tell me a Whole 30 friendly brand of bacon that you use? We have all the stores around here, so I'm sure I'll be able to find anything. Thanks!
ETA: Looks like if bacon isn't the most compliant route to take, I can and will swap it for prosciutto.

Is this your first Whole30?
It is my fourth.
Are you doing any modifications to the program?
I make shakes for many breakfasts without paleo protein powder, but it is plant based and vegan. I also will use "Coconut Milk drink" instead of straight coconut milk. Because of my disease I'm supposed to eat a Low Tyramine diet which includes no nuts. It significantly limits the "milk" I can drink.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances?
I've found it is a good way to remind myself of good habits and I always feel great when eating this way. Right now I've been eating like crap and therefore feel like crap. I do have diagnosed lactose intolerance and am confident I probably have other food issues.
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up?
Wine
Tell us about your meal plan for the week.
I "hard boiled" a dozen eggs for snacks and/or breakfasts. I'm currently making a huge batch of chili for dinner tonight and then I'll have leftovers for lunches. I'll also make soup and stew this week that I'll be able to freeze some of for lunches. I have the day off Wednesday and will make some freezer meals.
Any tips or thoughts you want to share? A little planning goes a long way. Find dishes you can prep in advance. Utilize your crock pot as much as possible. If I don't plan on the weekend, my week falls apart. Less than 2 hours on a Sunday and I'm golden for the week.

Is this your first Whole30?
No. H and I did this a few years ago.
Are you doing any modifications to the program?
Yes. I am breastfeeding and will be eating yogurt / nuts and having snacks. I'm also not limiting myself if I have an event on the weekend.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances?
I need to cut sugar out cold turkey because I went nuts after I had this baby. (I had GD and have been what you might call indulgent since he was born.) And I need to scale way back on alcohol. So those are my primary motivators. I'm not worried about wheat or gluten so much, but am throwing them into the mix for now. I want to lose 15 pounds. (I had lost all of my baby weight, but have gained 5 pounds back.)
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up?
Wine.
Tell us about your meal plan for the week.
It's a work in progress. These are there recipes we have over the next few days. I will tweak them to get as close as I can but this week will probably involve dairy still because most of the food we have for recipes I had already selected involve butter / dairy.
I'll share more Whole30-friendly recipes next week.
Any tips or thoughts you want to share?
I'm here for tips and have none to share, but I'm excited.
Oh wait. I do have one. Last time I guess we did the 21-day sugar thing along with Paleo and the fake desserts were bogus. Just have fruit if you're craving sweets.
I bought Pedersen's bacon at Whole Foods. I scoured the Whole30 forums and it looks like that was the one that most readily available. But it is pricier than regular non-compliant bacon.

Is this your first Whole30? I completed my first Whole30 in April 2014.
Are you doing any modifications to the program? Allowing alcohol during football games and not worrying about "paleo-fying" anything. Oh, and I snack at least once a day.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances? Mostly healthy eating but I know dairy screws me up, so it's a nice reset.
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up? Eating out regularly.
Tell us about your meal plan for the week. Breakfast is frittata made with bell peppers and onion Lunches are some freezer meals I found at Whole Foods that are compliant (http://grandcestors.com/) Tonight was baked wings and salad Tomorrow is zucchini spaghetti with beef Tuesday- crockpot roast Wednesday- Compliant sausage and salad with paleo ranch
The rest of the week I'll be at Disney World for work, so I'm just gonna have to graze around the buffet tables at the conference.
Any tips or thoughts you want to share? Plan, plan, plan! You will fail if you don't! Cinnamon in your coffee takes the acidic taste down a notch. I also like to keep kombucha around for digestive issues. I'll drink one bottle over a 2-3 day period. Just make sure it doesn't have cane sugar in it. "Once a Month Meals" has a great Whole30 plan if you're not good at planning.

ETA: Looks like if bacon isn't the most compliant route to take, I can and will swap it for prosciutto.
I use Niman Ranch bacon, which isn't compliant. It has sugar in it. I don't stress about it because we don't eat a ton of bacon. I've heard CostCo's Kirkland brand is sugar-free, but haven't confirmed it myself. U.S. Wellness has sugar-free bacon.
I am also going to try to incorporate low-FODMAP, on the suggestion of my GI doctor to help with IBS.
Are you doing a Whole30 because you want to eat healthier or because you are concerned about allergies/sensitivities/intolerances?
I was recently diagnosed with IBS after a colonoscopy and blood work didn't nail down any other diagnosis. I know for sure beer and liquid dairy set my GI system way off track, so I wanted to try something that eliminates that and see what happens.
As we get into our first week, what is going to be the hardest thing for you to give up?
Booze. I have a couple of standing social/civic obligations weekly at bars. Not drinking will be tough.
Tell us about your meal plan for the week.
I'm trying to stick to the simple is better philosophy. I roasted a chicken tonight to use for protein for salads, will do eggs with spinach in the morning, have frozen fish to defrost and bake for dinners. Made a big batch of modified chicken tortilla soup today as well.
I found some called Garrett Valley at Sprouts today. Can't vouch for the taste, because I have yet to try it, but it looks compliant.
I have this saved and want to make a few on Wednesday (day off for Three Kings Day). I'm not sure if it's in this link, but the OAMM paleo sausage recipe is great and I use it in several recipes.
You can substitute the soy sauce for coconut aminos and I've never used the sugar. I also use ground turkey only because it's more readily available. Ground chicken would also be delicious.

Oooh, I don't remember seeing this one at Whole Foods tonight. I'll have to check next time I'm there. Thanks!
I'm doing it because I need some healthier habits, need to lose a lot of weight, and because I'm concerned I'm sensitive to dairy and soy. I know that I feel like shit when I eat sugar, so I don't eat many sweets anyway.
The hardest part for me will be booze.
I don't really have a plan. I bought a bunch of meat and veggies and plan on keeping it simple. That's pretty much what we eat anyway, except for adding cheese to everything.
