My prediction for Lord G's tummy aches (Please, if you've seen it, do not tell me if I'm right?) is that he'll require some sort of medical care not available by Dr. Wazzisname, and the Dowager will be forced to admit that he might have lived if she had just gotten the hell out of the way.
The Dowager will literally choke on the words and she will keel over herself.
Oh, I hope the dowager doesn't end up "killing" Lord G. Though maybe you are right that he'll end up having some emergency that requires that he goes to another place w/ more advanced medicine and it'll finally make her see reason...
I really hope that the Dowager doesn't "kill" Donk . . . I know they're repeating story lines and all, but it would be Sybil all over again, no?

I cried when they were talking about Sybil and I think they're going to kill of Violet and I will cry and be so mad, she's my favorite, but at dinner I was like omg she looks like she's going to have a heart attack, she better not have a heart attack!!! I love her quips
I had been thinking that Robert's indigestion was going to be a red herring, but it is true that the writers on this show have no subtlety and that they're probably going to have him develop an emergency so that they can tie it into the whole hospital takeover argument. (Whether or not Robert actually dies of it).
If *I* was a writer on this show, I would use it as a major red herring and kill off someone else completely unexpectedly. Like Isobel, or maybe Cora. ETA: I feel like killing off the Dowager would not be unexpected. That would be the same as killing off Robert at this point.
(I haven't read any spoilers, this is all my speculation!)
Is Mary for real with this race car driver? I mean, hello, your husband died in a car accident and you are just cool with getting involved with someone who does something dangerous with cars for fun?
It's past time for Daisy to finish those exams, leave Downton, and get a regular job. Since Gwen showed up last night talking about this college, I'm going to guess that's where Daisy is headed. But I'm so tired of hearing her whining! Leave already!

Right? That's what I was thinking too.
Random, but I was thinking last night how its kind of odd that Matthew is NEVER mentioned by anyone. And why doesn't Isobel seem to have any sort of relationship with George? Its her grandson, and you'd think with her only child dead she'd show a little interest in him.

It was fairly common for the time. I mean, you hear Lord Grantham say that his father would have NEVER spent time with the children nor clambered around on the floor with them. You hear Violet say that she had to have tea every day with them - for a full hour! The HORROR!!!
The children were cared for by nannies and that was that.

I know, but Isobel was totally taken aback when Violet said that! We're led to presume she had a more active parenting role given her station in comparison to the others, which is why I find it odd. Even Lord Grantham has a relationship with the grandchildren.
ETA: I realize this is of little consequence, just a random thought I had last night because I'd actually forgotten that Isobel was Matthew's mom/George's grandmother.
"The show opens with Branson gazing upon Downton’s ridiculously expansive grounds. He’s basically the Powerball winner of 1925. What dumb luck!"
"By the fireplace, the Countess grills her friend about her nephew’s prospects. 40 men would have to die before he becomes an Earl. Ouch. Too bad the Titanic is already underwater; could’ve treated all 40 of them to a cruise."

It *is* odd, especially because they talk about Sybil all the time.

I know right??? The actress still looks really young, but even if somehow Daisy was only 12-15 years old in season 1 (1912), she has to be 25-28 by now in 1925. She has no excuse unless she's just not an intelligent person, and they've tried to indicate she did well with her studies.
I'm glad Bates didn't murder Anna over her secret-keeping, but he still had such a negative way of approaching her. STOP BEING SO WEIRD. "Back at Downton, Bates grills Anna, who has just returned. She finally tells him, Hey, stop brainstorming ways to kill me. I’m not cheating, just pregnant, silly! Bates is moderately pleased."
I loved this episode! First, it was nice to remember Sybil, even if the lump in my throat was massive. Plus, Gwen was back! The Carsons came back! Also, it was so funny! The banter between Robert and Lady Grantham, the argument at dinner, the passport line, when Mary said that "of course" Rosamund would vote against Lady Grantham. I don't know whether it was meant to be funny, but Thomas as Butler was just freaking hilarious to me (except his outing of Gwen, obviously)--those smirks.
Is it me or does Mary always looking extra fetching when a potential suitor is around? *swoon*. I wish his "prospects" were better! They are such a striking couple. Also, I loved when Mary said that Tom was her brother (I knew this, but I was happy to hear her voice it). I thought the same about why would she date a race car driver after what happened to Matthew, and I agree it's weird that we never see Isobel interact with George. She seems to act outside the norms for the time and she loved Matthew so much.
And, of course Edith was hating on Mary the entire episode! Won't you lose your job now that Tom's back? Why is Mary being dramatic about her health? We don't have to do everything that Mary says, blah blah blah. Go run your newspaper, Edith Downer. I am happy that she plans to hire a woman, though. I'm also excited for Tom to become an auto tycoon .
I know Cora and Robert can both be kind of dim, but really, they are getting on my nerves. I mean, what was the life expectancy back then? If a grandfather with stabbing pains shouldn't see a doctor, who should? Good prediction, @foodielicious. Yes, we've seen it before, but I don't care, I love the predictability of Downton. It makes me feel secure lol.
Daisy is the worst, not O'Brien the worst, but more like Ms. Bunting light the worst.
Off to read the snarky recap--thanks for posting @idaholakelady, I was thinking I'd have to go find it with raangoli on Downton mat leave .
I do think Robert's illness is going to cause the Violet to change her position on the hospital. Poor Cora if he drops dead.
I don't know what it is about Thomas, he is just a very complex character who invokes pity and contempt all in one scene. Daisy is annoying and I'm glad it worked out for Mr. Mason's sake.
Mrs Patmore's comment that Mrs Hughes now knew the secret of the world, lol.
Carson going to his old room one last time was touching.
I'm hoping that because Mary's already produced a true heir that she can marry "beneath" her. Because damn is he hot. I would not think she'd have Tony problems with HIM if you know what I'm saying.
I thought last night's episode was filled with more quips than usual and I loved it! I hadn't thought about relating Donk's issues with what's going on with the hospital, but I'm intrigued with these ideas. I'm over Daisy and her attitude but I'll take all the scenes with Matthew Goode that I can get.
10nille, re Thomas, I think it's because he only does the contemptuous things because he's so miserable, and that is very sad. Even after everything he's done, I don't want to see him let go. I also think that his "friendship" with Baxter could be the start of turning him around. I hope.

Oh, that's an interesting idea to tie in the dreadfully boring hospital debate.
This is funny, because I ended up going right to sleep last night after watching instead of coming here to discuss because I thought it was a boring one! Maybe I need to re-watch when I'm less tired/distracted.
So thinking further about Violet's commentary on the government taking power away from the important families, I do think it's interesting that the family decided to go against their economic self-interest in letting the farm to Mr. Mason. They definitely acted out of a sense of duty to their community and created a social safety net, which (I don't think) the government didn't do much of at that time. Interesting contrast to today.

While I did enjoy pieces of the episode, this is how I felt about it as well.
