Last night dh and I got into it about how our house feels unfinished and we literally have no where for guests to sit other than in the kitchen. Apparently he finds this embarrassing. I spend so much time on the floor or in the kitchen I guess I don't notice. However, I am kind of viewing this as a pass to go shopping and finish that sitting room I wanted.
I've seen IKEA shelves used as pseudo-window seats when cushions are placed on top and the shelves under them can hold books/blankets/etc. Has anyone done this? Can you PIP it or tell me specifically what you are using for the shelf and the cushions? I may c/p this on the home and garden board.

We have the long, skinny Trofast (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80153800/) in the kids' room, and have used it as a bench, though right now their dollhouse is on it. I bought two of their long skinny pillow forms (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00297685/ - not these pillows, but this shape; you can buy just the forms), made cute covers for them and put them along the back of the shelf, against the wall. If you wanted to add more cushioning, you can buy thick foam at some place like Joann's, and have it cut to exactly the size you want and make a cover for it pretty easily.
Do you want drawers or open storage? The kallax system has a piece that is four square sections and about seat height if you put a cushion. They also have different inserts like drawers, doors. And plastic/canvas bins that fit in various colors and finishes
