How high are your ceilings? I say nay if they're only 8ft. The ceiling in my dining room is a light taupe and it definitely makes the ceiling feel lower. I plan on repainting eventually (and repainting ceilings is PITA).
I say yay and have had the opposite experience. My office and DDs room both have colored ceilings (one tan, one yellow) same color as the walls and I get so many compliments on how bright and high my ceilings look.
Our guest room in the basement also has a light gray celing due to some issues and it makes that room feel less low basement ceilingish.
I normally hate anything but white ceilings (all our bedrooms have the same beige on walls AND ceilings and it drives me nuts but too much of a paint to paint!) BUT I think bright ceilings would be really fun for a young girls room!
It is a risk. Done right, the ceilings soar and you get tons of compliments. Done wrong, it makes a room feel claustrophobic. Managing the brightness will be key to make it work bright. I think it works best in larger rooms that are not filled up. Is this a larger room? Is it filled with furniture and toys?
I did it in our old dining room, which had standard ceilings and got lots of compliments, no problem with resale. The lower half of our walls had custom molding and were white, the top half of the walls and the ceiling were BM Gossamer Blue. We just did it again in our master bedroom, which has a tray vaulted ceiling (I choose BM's Queen Anne Pink with BM Seapearl walls.)
I'm growing older but not up. My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck, let the winds of time blow over my head. I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead.
I love the idea of it, but I HATE painting ceilings.
More than ceiling height, I'd be focused on overall room size and how much natural light the room gets. If it's a good-sized room with windows and plenty of light, I think a non-white ceiling could work fine.
Another option could be 2 walls of each color. A friend did this when she had two kids with very different interests sharing a room. She basically had two themes in one room, but coordinated with colors. Artwork & accessories on the walls were different. Butterflies were on the pink walls and animals were on the green walls. It wouldn't win any design awards, but it fit the kids perfectly & they were thrilled with it.
I like painted ceilings. I have done them with the same color as the wall and with the ceiling slightly lighter or darker than the wall....and I liked them all.
HGTV's Dream Home has the ceiling painted the same color as the walls (a bright teal) in the master bedroom.

My daughter's ceiling is a very bold purpley pink with glitter in the paint. I love how it turned out. It's fun, girly, and her the bright color she wanted without it being too in your face like it would be on a wall.

We need to see a picture! This sounds so fun and girly!

The lighting in this room makes it photograph terribly. After 2 years we've still yet to put a ceiling light in here and it faces south, so it gets a lot of sun. The glitter you can only see when the light hits it just right. I'm glad it turned out that way. It makes it more sparkley instead of in your face glitter.
