The mention of Boar's Head in the name brand/generic thread reminded me of an article I read about Boar's Head and their practices. Unsurprisingly, their 'superiority' is mostly just corporate branding.
"Think of Boar’s Head, finally, as a pushy New Yorker. A pushy New Yorker who, after years of attention-hogging, becomes perversely lovable. Boar’s Head is Donald Trump. It is Al Sharpton. What is Boar’s Head? It is the meat that will not go away."

I hear commercials for them all the time. I don’t think the store I shop at carries it. We buy mostly Black Bear, which I believe is exclusively sold at Shop Rite. According to DH, it’s pretty good.

Yeah, there's definitely no comparison with real deli meats. But at a Kroger or other similar store, it is usually the best option available by far. I worked at a deli during high school- if you slice a piece of Boar's Head and you can tell it is real meat. If you slice a piece of the low-end brands which are literally a cube of pressed ham or sphere of turkey, there is little resemblance to real meat and they feel like rubber. At the average grocery store I would always pick Boar's Head over the other brands in the deli. (in Utah I've never seen Dietz or Watson brands)
I was the one that mentioned Boars Head in the other article. I grew up eating generic lunch meat and then even bought the Publix brand myself when grocery shopping. I bought the Boars Head Provolone one week because it was on sale and it just tasted so much better than the Publix brand. The Publix brand was flavorless in comparison. Now, I only buy the Boars Head when I shop for lunch meats (which isn't often).
We don't have Dietz and Watson available around us but I would like to try it.
I must be living under a rock because I have not saw Boar's Head at grocery stores in the 3 midwest states I've lived in.
Only certain stores carry it. They have to be "certified" in order to carry it and all the deli personnel have to go though special training in order to be able to cut it. It is quite ridiculous of you ask me.

When I was a kid, we lived in Texas but spent several weeks on Long Island visiting family every summer. I LOVED Boar's Head bologna and liverwurst back then, and we could not get it in Texas, so it was a special summer treat, and I continue to love it today. I live in PA now and can get it at Giant, and buying those two items is still a special treat. I even had some bologna for dinner tonight!
However, to me, Clearfield will ALWAYS have the best American cheese!

Interesting. Our butcher switched from boars head to d&w and dh won't even try it (and he could live off deli meat). So interesting that some of you even prefer it over boars head.
Our closest grocery store is now a vons (safeway) and I hate whatever brand they have - and the fact that they preslice and it sits out all day. Gross.
