This question is for my parents -- they want to go to Iceland for about 10 days, and would like to get all around the island.
They're looking into a self-guided tour package for ease of finding accommodations in the more rural areas. They've found a ton of options offered by different companies but they're having trouble finding reviews.
Has anyone done this? If so, what tour company did you use and how would you rate it?
We did not use a package, but we started our accommodation research using www.farmholidays.is/ for the places we visited outside Reykjavik and Akureyri. We were more interested in farmstays and B&Bs, but they also list hotels and (from what I recall) were pretty honest about the different amenity levels each place offered. There aren't many hotels outside the main cities at all, so it would be pretty easy to cross-reference them with TripAdvisor.
From my experience, booking a package sounds like a pretty good idea. If not, you have to be sure to book well in advance, since there are so few places to stay!
We actually didn't book accommodations until a few weeks out, because we didn't think we wanted to be tied to a fixed itinerary. Then we started to realize that this was a huge mistake, because it was so hard to find places to stay! Even though we were okay with fairly basic accommodations and shared bathrooms, we ended up having to stay 50 miles away from some of the places we planned to visit the next day. The closest place we could find to Jökulsárlón and Vatnajökull was a farmstay in Höfn where we basically stayed on a fold-out sofa in the family's entertainment room! (We didn't care, because after calling 20 places in a 50-mile radius, we thought we were going to be sleeping in the car!)
So, from my experience, any company that actually books accommodations all the way around sounds like a great option to me!
