When building a new house where would you put carpet, hard wood, and other flooring? Our current farmhouse has carpet everywhere except entryway, kitchen, and bathroom. And that's all laminate and not nice flooring. I don't mind carpet and with two rambunctious toddlers and a baby due in June I like having carpet in our living room and bedrooms. I'm just not sure what I would want in the new house.
My dream is hardwoods everywhere except the bathrooms. In the bathroom I would do tile.
This!!! We have hardwoods almost everywhere that was put in by prior owners. BUT it's super annoying that the guest bath downstairs has hardwood. I don't mind carpet in my master and the stairs but would prefer hardwood had I done it from scratch. And def tile for the bathroom!

I agree with lala, but if I recall you're in my neck of the woods and it's cold in the winter. I'd put carpet in the bedrooms and the basement/family room. Dining room, living room, kitchen I'd do wood. Bathrooms they do some awesome fake tile these days you might check that out. we are doing that in our bathroom and it'll be softer on the feet, but looks like tile complete with grout lines.
At our last house we had hardwood everywhere but bathrooms and I thought I liked that...but now we have carpet in the bedrooms and I'm actually really enjoying it. Much cozier to get down and play and quieter for checking on sleeping children hahah!

Hardwood everywhere except the bathrooms. Tile in the bathrooms. I loath carpet (both how it looks and how it feels) and even if I didn't, we have allergies and asthma so we can't have it anyway.
We have bamboo floors throughout and stone in bathrooms and tile in laundry. I'm not a huge rug fan but have gotten a few for the kids to play on floor. I love having bamboo throughout - carpet kind of grosses me out.
I loathe carpet. I would love tile in the bathrooms and maybe the kitchen and hardwood everywhere else. I'm not sure about the kitchen because a friend of mine just had a huge water leak in her kitchen and replaced her wood floor with tile. It was really expensive.
We have laminate throughout and tile in the bathrooms. We couldn't afford hardwood and the carpet the previous owners left HAD to go (it smelled like cat pee and was in bad shape). Having the laminate throughout makes the house seem bigger and works well with our open floor plan.
We were kind of in the same boat as lexus - the house we bought had been a rental for a long time and the carpet was disgusting, but we couldn't afford hardwood. We did laminate everywhere on the main floor, tile in the bathrooms. There's still carpet downstairs, which is our rec room/office kind of area. It's cold here and the downstairs is a partial basement, so we'll probably do carpet again when it needs replacing. I'll do something very low-pile.

In an ideal world, we would have hardwood everywhere and tile in the kitchen and bathrooms. I am so, so, so tired of the cats throwing up on the carpet.
Hardwood everywhere but bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry room.
This past summer we ripped up the carpet and put down hardwoods. (Well, we paid someone, haha!) It's seriously the best thing ever. It's so much easier to clean and it looks nicer. More importantly, my daughter has severe asthma so it's done amazing things for her health.
We still have tile in our front entry way and formal dining room. I'd rather that be hardwood but it flows nicely into the kitchen and is fine. It's a PITA to take up tile so we are leaving it.
Well, we're in the process of building, and although we haven't gotten to the flooring stage, I'm pretty sure we'll be doing hardwood on the main floor great room, dining room, and hallways/area between, tile in the entryways, kitchen, cafe and all bathrooms, and carpet in the main floor den, upstairs bedrooms, and stairways.
DH would prefer hardwood instead of all of the carpet, but we're pretty sure it won't fit in our budget (haven't gotten the pricIng for it yet). If it does, we will do hardwood in those areas instead, but if it doesn't, it'll be carpet and I'll actually be glad. Even though I know hardwood is better for resale value, I actually prefer carpet on stairs and bedrooms; I think it's cozier.

When we had bought our house it was fully carpeted and now it's fully hardwood minus tiled kitchen and bathroom. We reduced the cost by doing one room at a time. Carpet is just the worst-so much harder to keep clean and worse for allergies. We have an area rug and slippers by our beds at night to help with cold floors in winter.
We changed out almost all the flooring when we moved into our house and did a renovation/addition. We had the hardest time deciding what to do in our great room. We ended up doing wood in the dining area and family room, but carpet in the great room, down the hall, and in the bedrooms. It's a neutral, kind of flat carpet with a woven-in subtle pattern. I have gone back and forth over whether we did the right thing, but I think mostly we did. Our great room is large with high ceilings and it would have been way too loud and echo-ey all in wood. I also really do like the carpet for the kids to play on and it's a lot easier for baby DD when she falls. We did tile in the bathrooms, mudroom, and left the existing tile in the kitchen.
We do regret not doing wood from the kitchen, through a strip of the great room, and down the hall to DH's entry way. The carpet in that walkway zone is going to get dirty fast. We were worried it would look "stripe-y" b/c we have slate in the entry to the great room (front door right there) and then the whole room ahead. In hindsight, though, we wish we'd put wood through the walk zone and then started the carpet.
Our tile looks great, but I really do prefer a softer surface and I don't love having grout. I would still probably use it everywhere we did, except that if we re-do the kitchen someday (we left existing tile there) I would do something softer. I dislike standing on the hard tile for cooking/washing dishes, and dropping anything is a nightmare, and I worry about the kids standing on chairs and climbing up to get things with the hard tile floor. I think cork flooring is cool.

I like tile in the bathrooms, carpet in the family room, and hardwood everywhere else. Bedrooms could be carpet too, especially if they are on the second floor. The only reason I like carpet in the family room is because I have a toddler (and baby on the way) and we are on the floor a lot. I would like tile in the kitchen if not for the grout getting dirty.

I think this is what we're leaning towards. Maybe carpeting the kids rooms while they're little but keeping the master hardwood. Downstairs will likely be carpet since it'll basically be a huge living area and play space.
We're on a farm in MN. I love the look of tile but definitely don't want the upkeep and cleaning grout. There are some really neat options for flooring. It'll be a decision for sure!
We have tile in the kitchen and bathrooms, hardwood everywhere else. DD and I have allergies and it's great for that, but I kind of wish we had carpet in the bedrooms.

I know this is an UO, but I don't mind carpet. Our current house has all hardwoods on the main floor and when moving in I was afraid I would miss carpet, but I actually do like it. We have a huge area rug in the living room that covers the main area so that works for us, so that is what I would do again. We have an area rug under the dining room table that doesn't get used much, and nothing under the table we eat at every day. The stairs and hallway upstairs are hardwood, but the bedrooms other than the master have carpet. I actually wish the master had carpet too, we probably will add it someday. Also with littles, I would have liked carpet on the stairs, but at the age my kids were when we moved in (3 and 5) I didn't mind the hardwood on the stairs/in the hall.
