What activities did you do in school? What did you love? Did you do any during college? Do you still participate in any of those activities? Do you see your kids taking any interest in those things?
I did a lot of sports through about 10th grade. I tried everyrhing. My dad was a coach and I kind of felt pressured to do a lot. I wasn't terrible but I really didn't love it. Well, actually I was pretty terrible at tennis haha
My true love is drama/theatre though and I finished my high school years doing that (plus cheer and dance.) I liked it so much more. I did a littke in college and I still do community theatre but haven't done a production since dd was around 6 months. I want to do more this year.
I do think DD will like theatre. She is a center of attention kind of gal. Idk about ds, he's just 2 so too early to tell. I will of course encourage my kids to do what they enjoy but I might die a little inside if they don't like theatre haha
I did and dance gymnastics when I was in elementary school. In the summer I took tennis lessons and was on swim team. I also did Girl Scouts from 1st-5th grade and took piano lessons from ages 7-18. Drill team in high school.
I loved swim and tennis and wish I had kept up with them better. I may join a masters swim team.
No college activities unless you count binge watching soap operas.
ETA: I did do theatre in college for a few years and loved it so much.
I did student government, was co-captain of the debate team and sang first soprano for my hs concert choir. I no longer do choir but I went into the legal field so still use those debate skills . I didn't do sports-it was partly a function of being a nerd that wanted maximum homework time and a function of financial hardship and a disinterested parent who wouldn't even give me rides to school let alone sports practice/games.
There were a lot of activities I would have liked to participate in, but my dad had put so much time and money into my brother's football that it would have been impossible. Of course my brother decided he didn't want to play football at the same time he had a college scout at a game just for him. It kind of pissed me off that my dad invested so much and he just threw it all away.
I didn't do much in school (I think I was on the volleyball team for, like, one year). I tried out the yearbook club but found it so incredibly boring that I quit right away. I was pretty academic.
Extracurricular-wise I was in Brownies, Girl Guides and Pathfinders, which I loved. I also took a few classes here and there at the community centre, like cooking, ceramics and cheerleading.
DS is pretty active, so I think we'll start him off in things like sports/gymnastics/martial-arts-type stuff and see how it goes from there. He's not in any organized activities yet.

I'm HS I did theater, speech, swimming (just two years), academic honor society, art honor society and church activities.
During college I did a variety of intramural activities: flag football, soccer, racquetball and broom all. I loved playing broom all. That was definitely my favorite. I met my dh playing racquetball.
My oldest loves swimming and is really good at it so far. Otherwise I think it's too early to tell. We are very involved at church so I see them participating there and dh and I agree that swimming is a life skill they must have so they will be proficient swimmers whether they compete or not.
I think the tendency is to expose your kids to things you know about and love. We take dds biking and dh wants to take them skiing (his passions). I expect they will be active, how they do that is up to them. I don't want to be over scheduled and I think they need time to be bored and get creative.

In HS I did theater, dance team, track, and wrote/edited for the school newspaper. I also did Mock Trial one year. That was really fun. With the exception of dance and maybe newspaper, my start in nearly all of my activities can be traced back to a cute boy...I kind of hope DD does not follow that method.
When I was a little kid I did all kinds of sports...bball, soccer, softball, ballet. I tried out brownies and a few other things but wasn't interested. In high school I did basketball and track. No other extracurricular activities except a part time job.
In college I focused on school...and boys & booze. Haha. I did take up a part time job my junior year.
Now, I don't have too many activities. I do try to work out, but haven't in a few weeks.
Super dork in high school. Student council, yearbook, prom committee, track and field, drama club
I also had a part time job junior and senior year for about 10 hours a week.
I tried sports in middle school. Oh boy was I terrible!
College. School newspaper and I was an editor on the school's literary magazine.
Don't call yourself a dork. Would you call your child that if they had the same interests?
I never played any sports or did dance or anything - some of that was my parents fault when I was younger - time & money but also I think they thought I'd ask if I wanted to do something? But I had no idea. I don't really care too much but I do wonder if I might be more coordinated or would have stayed a healthier weight.
Anyway, I was always involved in things like Girl Scouts, church stuff, service related groups, french club, stuff like that. In college I was very involved, had elected & "paid" positions in Student Government and our Student Activities Board. I loved it so much and learned a lot. Those activities are also what led me to choose the career path I did (student affairs in Higher Ed).
Now I am on the alumni council for my alma mater and just finished up a 3 year stint as the co-chair. I also serve on the Board for our church preschool & other church involvements. So, yes, I do think they're related to my college activities and see myself doing more of the same.
I wasn't in any extra curricular activities as a kid, maybe swimming lessons twice. Later in high school I was in horse 4-H. I still ride, 4 or 5 times a week (well not right now since I'm injured).
I swam and played water polo competitively in high school and college. I played the piano and violin in junior high/high school. I sang, did theatre in high school. I did model UN in high school and college and actually traveled a lot for it - even to places like Brazil for conferences.
I still swim...I did masters swimming but don't have time for that now and will start back up when the kids are older.

As a kid, my mom had me in a ton of stuff - ballet, ice skating, piano, Girl Scouts, golf, art - but a lot of that tapered off by junior high. In high school, I played on the softball team freshman year (hated it), then got involved in the theatre program and mainly did that (and majored in it in college). My dad still made me take golf lessons all the way through high school, but I never got any better at it and I still hate it.

I'm impressed with anyone in good enough shape to play water polo! I can't imagine treading water for that long!!!

Practice was brutal. We had to tread water taking turns holding a metal folding chair above our heads.

I did a lot in middle school. Cheerleading, basketball, yearbook. In catholic school you could be fairly unathletic and get away with playing sports lol. That didn't fly in the larger public high school I went to. I did yearbook for college applications and that's it if I remember correctly. I wanted to spend my time after school with friends/boyfriends. In college I was way more involved as I lived on campus. I did student government, yearbook, a number of clubs, etc.
I played basketball and volleyball in middle school. In high school, I ran track and was on student council, FCA, and yearbook committee. I didn't do any extra curricular activities in college. I went to a local college, lived at home, and worked part time. I regret not being more involved in college. DS is already playing basketball and has talked about running track. DD has no interest in anything besides cheer. I'm not sure is both will get involved in student council or other activities like that in high school.
I dance, gymnastic and I was a cheerleader. DD1 has already taken after me in the first two areas. But, she also plays soccer as well. I was not sporty at all, so I am happy to see her trying things like that out!
I was a dancer and never had much time for anything else. I started taking classes at 7, started competing at 10, and kept at it until I graduated high school. I was in a few clubs in high school as well.

I was very involved in theater and band. Added choir in as well a bit later.
I did Girl Scouts from K-7th but my mom made me stop because she didn't have the time and money to help me do my Silver Award. I played softball from K-7th as well. I was horrible at it lol (picking daisies in the outfield horrible).
I wanted to do dance but my mom never had the money for it.
Starting sophomore year of HS I also always had a part time job in addition to activities. My mom wouldn't let us not work.
I haven't done any of that stuff since college. As an adult my time and energy have shifted to political activism and I am involved in that. I also am involved in a group who fundraises for technology in our schools (like the PTO but with a more narrowly defined purpose).
Penguin - I want to get more involved in politics locally, at least. What do you suggest? Contacting someone in office that I agree with and volunteering? Or someone running? Or I could contact our local democratic group.

I would look for your local chapter of Organizing for Action or a local democrats club. They're very likely beginning to really hit the ground running on various elections, especially for the primaries, so now is a great time to get involved.

That's what I was thinking. Plus the dem convention is here this summer; hoping to do something there.

You totally should! I may travel out for it if I can find a way to be involved!
