I don't have that memory, but this part is cracking me up:
Maybe that’s true for some people with this memory, but — even if I’d seen the movie as a small child and later forgot it — what I recall was in color, and it wasn’t funny.
I'm really annoyed that the current ones being written by their son are so damn preachy. Like, I want to slap the sanctimony out of Cousin Fred on the regular.
You guys, looking at old copies won't help because they OBVIOUSLY went back in time and changed it. We just have these shadow memories left.
When growing up we always pronounced it "steen" (long e) and it was spelled Berenstein. Then my freshman year of high school (1999) I took German and learned that -ein is pronounced "eye"n, with a long i. So I went back to look at the books and tell my mom we've been saying it wrong.
And then two years ago when my son was born, I tore out my old books and they were BerenstAin! So whoever went back in time did it after 1999 or else my freak out would have happened in high school.
Maybe it was Y2K. The computers didn't all crash and no Armageddon, but those Berenst(e)ain Bears got the brunt of it.
In my head I have always pronounced it Beren-STEEN, so there is no way that it has always been spelled with A. Why would I pronounce it that way if there were an A? Why???
This is how it's pronounced where I'm from and how we read it to O.

I also always thought it was -stein. My mom was a kindergarten teacher and all of her old books say -stain. I've read a lot about the Mandela effect and it's some freaky shit, yo. I also remember the turkey leg portrait, New Zealand is in a different spot on the map, and I swear it was Interview with A Vampire, not THE vampire.
