Consumers File Lawsuit Against EOS, Claim Lip Balm Causes Blistering and Bleeding
"The class-action lawsuit, filed by Rachel Cronin on behalf of other plaintiffs, claims that "within hours, her lips became substantially dry and coarse, like sandpaper, causing her to apply more of the balm on her lips to achieve the results of becoming 'sensationally smooth.'" But instead, the claim says, "they began severely cracking on the edges, causing flaking and bleeding from the cracks, and by the next day there was severe blistering and rashes, causing her to seek medical care on December 7, 2015. Her condition lasted for 10 days."
I supposed people with peanut allergies should line up and sue Jif?
She seems to have an allergy to one of the ingredients in the lip balm.
Here's an idea: if something makes you break out DON'T USE IT.
Fin.
Yeah, I am here. I recently had issues with a different brand of lip balm. Dry, cracked. Reapply, gets worse. Starts bleeding. Stop applying. Cured within a couple of days. I threw the lip balm away, it never occurred to me to sue the company.

The problem is the company is using ingredients that are known skin irritants, some of which are illegal in other countries, not that people are having allergic reactions to it.
The product needs to be pulled from the shelf and if a class action lawsuit facilitates that, I'm in favor.

I think it is a little different than that. EOS balms have ingredients that are banned in other countries because they are toxic. The ingredient causes dryness and cracked lips- which is what the balm is supposed to treat. Therefore people who are using it actually use more to try and counteract the issues that are worsening thinking that the symptoms are unrelated. The balms say that they heal these symptoms. These balms are marketed as a remedy, they are not.

my mom put some in my stocking but I can't stand the shape of it and apparently it's the new "thing" with grade school girls so DD1 asked if she could have it. I guess I better watch and make sure it's not bothering her, or are these ingredients something I should not let my kids be using? I have heard about these issues with EOS for a long time now but like his I just assumed it was an allergy thing, I never paid close attention since I hate it anyway

It's not an allergy. They include ingredients in it that are known irritants. The irritant that is in question is actually banned in the EU. A couple girls on CEP have have had these issues, and it's not just a simple allergy.

I didn't know this. Interesting.
My mom gave me one in my stocking for Christmas (Yes, my mother still gives stockings to her grown adult children). I've noticed that it doesn't work as well as my regular Chapstick. It seems to wear off much faster, but I haven't gotten a rash or anything.
ESF and heyjude you have some educating to do over here. After reading what they went through with this crap, it's obviously not an issue of the product just not working for some people.
But isn't their body's reaction just a sensitivity to the ingredients?
There are a lot of products out there that people swear by but they don't work for everyone.
Clinique makes my lips big and puffy and itchy.
Can I sue them?
Is the product you are using advertised to fix big, puffy, itchy lips?
That is the difference here. The balm is advertised to fix dryness issues, but actually CAUSES it. So people put it on, their lips get dry, they put more on, and the problem gets worse.

I put EOS lip balm in all of kids' stockings at Christmas. I actually love the shape because it's big enough that they don't lose it. They haven't had issues, but should I take it away? Off to google the banned ingredient...
I dont understand, if the ingredient is banned in the eu, wouldn't eos be off the shelves in the EU? I have bought eos at boots in the UK and seen it for sale in sweden...
Same. People can be allergic to things. No need for a lawsuit. I'm allergic to tide laundry detergent, maybe I should sue them?? Lol
One more time for people who lack reading comprehension. The lawsuit isn't about an allergy issue. It's about EOS containing a product that contains ingredients that cause skin irritations and dryness while claiming to fix irritation and dryness. Using their product makes it worse, so people use more and than buy more.
It would be like if Tide was making your clothes dirtier and so you used more trying the get them clean.

I'm thinking they have a different formula for other countries.

One (just one mind you) of the ingredients causing problems is Linalool. If you've had a reaction to lip balm, it was probably the ingredient that did it.

They are using ingredients banned in many countries that CAUSE what they are proclaiming to fix.
This is very different then just being allergic. It would be like me putting bithionol (an ingredient that causes photocontact sensitization and is banned) in sunscreen and saying that it will keep you from getting sunburned. While many people might not get sunburned, it doesn't mean that the people who did get sunburned are responsible when an ingredient I've knowingly included actually makes people more susceptible to it.

I can read what you're saying. I think papie and I were both saying that we have not had that experience with the product. It doesn't dry my lips out or make me use more.

Yeah. The thing is, my lips are sensitive and react badly to lots of brands of lip balms, and not to that one. So sure, it may contain ingredients that cause bad reactions to some people, but it's obviously not universal.
I don't think this example is relevant. Is Tide marketed to treat your allergies?
Tide for sensitive skin made my son break out with bleeding hives, even though it's marked to be sensitive. Can I sue them? this is their claim " It's made with no dyes or perfumes and is Dermatologist Recommended to provide your fabrics with a great clean that's gentle on your skin" and "Q: Can I use Tide Free & Gentle on my baby's clothes? A: Yes. Tide Free & Gentle is free from dyes and perfumes, which is perfect to use for a baby’s sensitive skin."
So, I should sue, right? And those recommending dermatologists too!
You could. Tide is an irritant to a lot of people.
