One year ago today, my son was brave enough to break through his nearly 4 years of silence (in school). I will always remember this day, when I received a text from my friend whose twins came off the bus, so excited B had spoken with them. Within a matter of days he was fully verbal with his entire classroom and friends on the playground and at lunch as well as many on the bus. It was truly an incredible breakthrough for him.
I know many of you had followed along with his journey over those long years, and I truly appreciated all of your support.
Thought I would share a small update: Today, he is thriving. This past year, he moved into upper elementary (4th & 5th Grade), speaks with most children, even making new friends from another elementary that merged in. He had tried soccer for the first time in the fall and fell in love with it. He also is eating a full lunch this year (previously he would only drink) which is a big relief. H is also involved with a community service group in school.
We still have some mutism and anxiety we are working through but he is still making progress with small steps. We need to keep working with him on becoming verbal with teachers, and coaches (other adults) but I have not doubt he can overcome all of this with time and practice.
