I saw that on the Today Show this morning. How stupid! If I won the Powerball, I don't think I'd tell anyone (I'm in a state where it doesn't need to be disclosed). And if I did tell people, it sure as hell wouldn't be by way of the Today Show!
I read an article earlier about a woman who blew her entire savings on tickets, won nothing, and now has a GFM to raise money to buy more tickets.
I'm so sick of the Powerball.
Apparently MN had radio/tv PSAs urging people to only purchase an amount of tickets they can afford. I shouldn't be surprised that people would do this, but really?
They need a new attorney. Good lord. Luckily I'm in a state where you can be anonymous but if I weren't, I'd have gotten SO MUCH stuff and layers of protection set up before claiming it.
And going on the Today show would never, ever, ever happen. Ever.
This family will be another one of those sad stories of winners who eventually go broke.

Saw this this morning and I did not get the logic at all. The lawyer was standing with them hamming it up on camera. I think he's just looking for notoriety for himself. At one point I was like, "why is the lawyer's daughter also part of this interview?!?" (I think she's the one that contacted NBC for the story?)

They have it set up here that tickets have to be bought in cash, not credit or card. It's sad they have to do it that way, but it makes sense.
(note: I'm not sure if this is law, or just what shop owners do to protect themselves)

They are walking around with the winning ticket, No Tresspassing signs and worried about people they knew in elementary school asking them for money! Priceless!
so, really--anyone could steal the ticket and claim it as their own, right? Would this couple have any recourse?
I think you are supposed to sign the back of your ticket as a preventative measure in case of theft. But, their shitty lawyer probably didn't advise them of that.
If I had a winning ticket, I'd lock it up in a safe deposit box ASAP until I was ready to collect.

I can kind of understand wanting to get ahead of the media storm. Be the first one out, so someone else can be the last - since none of the winners are in states where they can remain anonymous.
This isn't the way I'd do it though. They haven't even officially claimed it yet! Sign that effer. Lock it in a safe deposit box. Don't carry it around NY!!
This may get me flamed, but I feel like people who typically purchase lottery tickets aren't the most (financially or otherwise) savvy. I can't say I'm surprised. Also, that lawyer is an idiot.
