DD loves loves loves The Princess in Black. We've read both books in the series approximately a billion times. She's counting down the days for the third one to be released.
She likes Mercy Watson, too.
We've tried Nancy Clancy since she loves Fancy Nancy but she prefers chapter books with more pictures.
We skew up more when we read, that's why I asked. Ramona books, Little house books, any classic (we've done peter pan, little women, wizard of oz, pinochio, the hobbit, etc), simple biographies - we have a Dr. Seuss & Walt Disney ones they've liked, Wildwood (it's a series, it's really long but the author is in the Decemberists). We haven't done it yet but there is an illustrated Harry Potter now. Pippi Longstocking - there is also a cute comic version.
Stuff that DD1 is reading on her own that yours might enjoy: Princess in Black, Owl Diaries, Nancy Drew Clue Crews, Magic Treehouse, Junie B Jones, Judy Moody, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.

Can she read those herself at 5? DD is still working through BOB books.
I don't mind reading up, Ivy & Bean is for 6-8 year olds I think. I just want to make sure I'm not reading over her head.
Sorry, no, she's 7 & in first! The first list are ones that we've been reading to her & the 4 year old over the last few years and and the second list is the ones the 7.5 year old has been reading the last few months her self. But your DD would still like listening to them.
I think as long as you aren't reading Stephen King or something it's okay to read "older" books. You are there to explain things, etc.

I loved boxcar children books by the time I was 7. She might enjoy hearing them. Otherwise I agree with previous suggestions. Magic tree house is awesome.
Agree with everything everyone else said. My just-turned 5 yo boy & almost 7 year old girl are obsessed with Magic Tree House and also loved "Princess in Black." We also have read Junie B., Ramona, Ivy & Bean, and I have Heidi Heckelbeck that we haven't tried yet.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
DD loves Owl Diaries. She got the 1st one last year when she was 5 at the book fair & the 2nd one this year at the book fair. She loved it so much we read the 1st one again. We ordered her the 3rd one & gave it to her as a Christmas gift & she just loves it.
She also enjoys Henry & Mudge, as well as, Frog & Toad. They are beginner chapter books.
